Breakfast in the ClassroomPosted on: Friday, October 23, 2015Walk through a York County School Division elementary school at the start of the school day and you will likely see students with both books and breakfast at their desk. Four schools have already adopted a new strategy, breakfast in the classroom, to help make sure students have the opportunity to fuel their brains with the most important meal of the day. In the coming weeks, four additional elementary schools will implement the program. To date, all participating schools have seen more than a 100% increase in daily breakfast participation rates at their schools. Teachers have also shared that the program is very successful in ensuring that more students have access to a healthy breakfast while also reducing the morning rush. Read more |
York County Fire and Life Safety Visits SchoolsPosted on: Friday, October 16, 2015York County Fire & Life Safety firefighters thrilled students around York County this week with visits to various schools. As part of Fire Safety Week activities, firefighters taught students how to be safe in the event of a fire. Project SEARCH Outcome AwardsPosted on: Friday, October 16, 2015The International Project SEARCH group has posted their Outcome Awards for 2013-14 and for the fourth straight year, the Sentara Williamsburg Project SEARCH program has achieved 100% employment! This program is a partnership between YCSD, WJCC School Division, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, the Department of Aging and Rehabilitation Services, Colonial Behavioral Health and The Choice Group. The goal of the program is full time competitive employment for students with disabilities, as the national average for employment for this population is approximately 33%. Read more |
Healthy Bay for Healthy KidsPosted on: Friday, October 16, 2015Two Yorktown Elementary School students and their parents were invited to participate in a special event at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) in October. Virginia’s First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe and Executive Mansion Chef Ed Gross helped a group of ten local second graders learn about the link between human health and the health of Chesapeake Bay during a visit to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science for the most recent Healthy Bay for Healthy Kids event. YMS Field Hockey Raises $1,200 for the American Cancer SocietyPosted on: Friday, October 16, 2015The Yorktown Middle School (YMS) field hockey team played its 6th annual Stick it to Cancer game, again Grafton Middle School, on Thursday, October 8. The team sells concessions, collects donations and entrance fees to benefit the American Cancer Society. Over the past six years, the YMS Stick it to Cancer games have raised more than $8,200 in support of the American Cancer Society! Read more |
