GHS Student Selected 2019 Presidential ScholarPosted on: Thursday, May 09, 2019Please join us in congratulating Katelynne Berland, a senior at Grafton High School and New Horizon's Regional Governor School for Science and Technology. This week, she was named as one of the 161 students nationwide selected as a 2019 Presidential Scholar. Seniors earn this prestigious recognition for their accomplishments in academics, the arts and career, and technical education. Berland was one of only two selected from Virginia. Katelynne recently presented at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Albuquerque, and will be presenting again at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix next week. She will also be presenting at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Los Angeles this July. She will be pursuing a biomedical engineering degree next year at Georgia Tech. Tabb High Club EarthPosted on: Friday, April 26, 2019Members of the THS Club Earth volunteered their time to collect recycling for all of Tabb High School. This spring they went with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Elisabeth Reed Carter Virginia Environmental Program to explore the health of Broad Bay at First Landing State Park. They explored physical and chemical parameters, seined to evaluate biodiversity and even learned about the categories of pollutants found in the Chesapeake Bay! Read more |
THS Student Earns Perfect ACT ScorePosted on: Wednesday, April 24, 2019A Tabb High student has achieved a rare accomplishment - she earned a perfect score on her college admissions test. Junior Paola Amadeo scored the highest possible ACT composite score - a 36. The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science, each scored on a scale of 1-36. A student's composite score is the average of the four test scores. To put this in perspective, only around two-tenths of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn this top score Read more |
Tidewater Regional Seaperch ROV CompetitionPosted on: Monday, April 22, 2019Hard work really does pay off!! Over the last two months, 20 Tabb Middle School budding engineers spent 20 hours working in six collaborative teams to design, build, and test an underwater robot and controller. These students participated in the Tidewater Regional Seaperch ROV competition in April and received 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards in 3 categories, including the overall Championship award. YFPE School Bus PullPosted on: Monday, April 15, 2019Twelve teams came out for the inaugural York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. School Bus Pull this Saturday - despite the soggy conditions. We thank those hearty souls for supporting this brand new fundraiser and truly flexing their muscles while they pulled for our schools! It was a very tight competition to see which team could pull a full-size school bus the fastest! Congratulations to Team "Tabb Wrestling" - the first place team with the fastest pull time of 16.75 seconds. Second place when to the Average Gregs, and the NautiBoyz brought home third place. YCSD Teacher of the Year AnnouncedPosted on: Thursday, March 28, 2019The York County School Division is proud to announce that Amanda Poe, a Grafton Middle School foreign language teacher, has been selected as the division’s Teacher of the Year. Amanda was one of three finalists for the honor and was surprised with the news by the Teacher of the Year prize patrol. The Teacher of the Year prize patrol, sponsored by TowneBank and the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc., included Superintendent Dr. Victor Shandor, School Board member Jimmy Richardson, members of the division's Executive Leadership Team, education foundation representatives and Vice President of TowneBank Sandra Allen. As the division Teacher of the Year, Amanda is now a candidate for the regional Teacher of the Year. One of the eight regional honorees will be named the state Teacher of the Year in the fall. SBO Art ContestPosted on: Wednesday, March 20, 2019The winning artwork from the YCSD Student Art Contest was unveiled this afternoon. The contest is open to all division students, with winners being selected at the elementary and secondary levels. Congratulations to Kaitlynn Otoo-Annan, first grade student at Seaford Elementary School; Daliana Torres Mojer, fourth grade student at Bethel Manor Elementary School; Hannah Camarillo, 12th grade student at Tabb High School; Daizjah Whiting, 10th grade student at Bruton High School. TMS Battle of the Books CompetitionsPosted on: Tuesday, March 19, 2019Tabb Middle School’s Battle of the Books team won first place in the county battle held at the York County Public Library, then went on to represent York County at the regional battle held at the Williamsburg Regional Library this past weekend. Out of the five teams competing within the region, Tabb Middle School came in second place. Read more |
YCSD School Level Teachers of the YearPosted on: Thursday, March 14, 2019York County School Division administrators and members of the York Foundation for Public Education shared exciting news with three teachers as they announced division's school level teachers of the year. The Teacher of the Year prize patrol, sponsored by TowneBank and the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc., included Superintendent Victor Shandor, members of the division's Executive Leadership Team, education foundation representatives and Vice President of TowneBank Sandra Allen. The group surprised each of the teachers: Stacey Herrick, Seaford Elementary School; Amanda Poe, Grafton Middle School; and Cara Townsend, Bruton High School. The three finalists, one for each level, were chosen from among the nineteen teachers named as their individual school’s teacher of the year. A selection panel comprising teachers and school administrators will interview the finalists before selecting the division teacher of the year. Read more |
