Tee TimePosted on: Thursday, September 05, 2013Yorktown Elementary School students will be provided basic golf instruction in their physical education classes this school year through a partnership with the First Tee of the Virginia Peninsula. The First Tee National School Program, initiated in 2004, is now in nearly six thousand schools across the country. The goal of the program is to give schools the tools to incorporate golf techniques, character values and health lessons into their physical education curriculums. Read more |
Bailey Field Spectator ParkingPosted on: Thursday, September 05, 2013The York County School Division, in conjunction with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, is implementing new parking procedures for all varsity football games hosted at Bailey Field for the 2013-2014 school year. Beginning this Friday, September 6, 2013, the access road directly adjacent to Bailey Field will be closed to all thru-traffic at 4 p.m. This road closure has been established to allow parking for home and visiting team buses as well as to reduce pedestrian safety risks. Spectators should enter the parking lot through Route 17 or Falcon Road. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring the safety and well-being of our teams and fans at all Bailey Field activities. Foundation Grant WinnerPosted on: Thursday, September 05, 2013The Dominion Foundation recently awarded the York County School Division with a $4,000 grant to support the creation of a field classroom and walking trail for students of all ages. The project is currently under development and will be located behind Waller Mill Elementary School. The focus of the project is to provide the students with a better understanding of nature, their responsibilities and relationship to the natural environment of Eastern Virginia and promote a healthy active lifestyle. The grant proposal was submitted by Roger Searles, a Waller Mill Elementary School teacher. The Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources, is dedicated to improving the physical, social and economic well-being of the communities served by Dominion companies. GBES 2013-2014 School HoursPosted on: Tuesday, July 30, 2013Grafton Bethel Elementary School will have a slight schedule adjustment beginning with the 2013-2014 school year. In June, the School Board voted to change the school hours to 9 a.m. to 3:36 p.m. The change was based on school buses needing more time to complete routes due to high traffic volume. Read more |
YCSD 2013-2014 Meal PricesPosted on: Tuesday, July 30, 2013The School Board has approved new prices for school breakfast and lunch. Applications for free and reduced-price meals are distributed to parents at the beginning of the school year. Applications may also be requested at any time from any school, and can be found on the division website. Read more |
Important Vaccination InformationPosted on: Tuesday, July 30, 2013All rising sixth-graders are required by Virginia law to have a tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) booster shot prior to entering the 6th grade in September. Students cannot start school without proof of this immunization. If your child has had this immunization within the last five years, the shot does not need to be repeated. However the school must have proof of this shot. Read more |

Educational Leaders Share Best PracticesPosted on: Tuesday, July 30, 2013Several YCSD staff members took part in the recent Conference on Education in Richmond. The conference is sponsored annually by the Virginia School Boards Association as an opportunity for school administrators and school board members to share successful educational practices taking place throughout the state. YCSD presentations included such topics as staff development, work readiness programs for students with disabilities, and student engagement. In addition to staff presentation, School Board member Page Minter and Superintendent Eric Williams attended as representatives of the school division. Read more |
YCSD Students Create Digital Educational ToolsPosted on: Tuesday, July 30, 2013Dozens of students recently took part in a new weeklong summer camp this July. The camp, a partnership between the York County School Division (YCSD) and Discovery Education, was designed to give students hand-on experience with a new digital tool called Board Builder. Board Builder allows students to create and share interactive videos and photos with more than one million Discovery Education subscribers. YCSD students in grades 5-12 spent the week developing videos based upon a field trip to the Jamestown Settlement at the start of camp. The camp is part of a three-year contract with Discovery to help develop and test a beta version of Board Builder. York County teachers and students were the first in the country to use the tool, which went live to all subscribers in May. Read more |
