Blue Star SchoolsPosted on: Friday, October 16, 2015All five YCSD high schools have been named Blue Star Schools by the W!SE (Working in Support of Education) Financial Organization. In order to qualify, a school must have achieved a 75% passing rate on the Financial Literacy Certification Test and have either a majority of students in a given grade level take the test or have an average score of 85% or higher among the students who participated in the test. YHS Drama Takes the International StagePosted on: Friday, October 09, 2015York High School (YHS) Drama was awarded the honor of Most Outstanding Production for 2015 at the American High School Theatre Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland this summer. The production was entitled “Down Came the Rain” and it highlighted the relationship between a young autistic boy and his brother. Read more |
YES Book Lunch BunchPosted on: Friday, October 09, 2015Thirty rising third, fourth, and fifth grade Yorktown Elementary School (YES) students were challenged to read the book Donavan’s Word Jar in August and begin a collection of new vocabulary words. The students met with Principal Kelly Denny for a book talk to share their vocabulary words and discuss the book during lunch this week. Read more |
Tabb/Grafton Cadets Support Operation HomefrontPosted on: Friday, October 09, 2015NNDCC cadets from Tabb and Grafton High schools assisted Operation Homefront this past week at Joint Base Fort Eustis. Operation Homefront is an organization that assists military families all over the United States and supports deployed service members. The organization helps provide homes, toys, and many other services for families. While at Fort Eustis, the cadets joined them in collecting both money and toy donations for the children of deployed parents raising almost $1,000 and collecting 128 toys. Read more |
YHS Student Races into HistoryPosted on: Friday, October 09, 2015York High School (YHS) freshman Macy Causey was recently invited to compete for a spot in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity (D4D) development program, along with 21 other drivers. Causey not only made the cut, she made history by being the youngest driver ever invited to participate. Now in its 12th year, the annual Combine invites promising ethnically diverse and female drivers from across North America to test their skills over a three-day period in order to identify members of the NASCAR D4D Class of 2016. Driver combine participants will be evaluated on their driving skills and will also be tested on a series of strength and agility exercises. The three-day qualification will take place later this month at Langley Speedway in Hampton. Read more |
Seaford Elementary Second Grade ScientistsPosted on: Friday, October 02, 2015As an introduction to scientific observation and animal adaptations, Seaford Elementary School second graders examined blue crabs and discussed how they are adapted to their environment. They also listened to Two Crabs in the Moonlight, a Japanese story about crab adaptations and, as a culminating activity, created t-shirts using the ancient Japanese printing art of gyotaku!
