Third Grade Students Recognized for KindnessPosted on: Friday, December 18, 2015Mallory Pillsbury's third grade class at Yorktown Elementary School entered the “Choose Kind” campaign after reading about it in the Scholastic magazine. The campaign is based on the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The book discusses the importance of accepting one another and not bullying those who are different from you. The author also challenged readers to place a marble in a jar for every act of kindness and send a picture once the jar was full. The first 500 classrooms in the nation to complete the challenge receive an official Choose Kind banner to display outside of their classroom. Once the campaign is over, the campaign company will randomly select 5 of the 500 classrooms to win a pizza party and a video chat with R.J. Palacio! Read more |
YCSD Finance AwardsPosted on: Friday, December 18, 2015The York County School Division finance team was recognized at the December School Board meeting for earning multiple budgeting and financial reporting awards. The Fiscal Year 2016 Budget was awarded the Meritorious Budget Award from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). In addition, the Fiscal Year 2014 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) was awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Award from ASBO and the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Award from GFOA. SES Students Have a Native American PowwowPosted on: Friday, December 11, 2015Second graders at Seaford Elementary School (SES) enjoyed culminating activities to celebrate the end of a Native American Unit in History. First, the students participated in a Native American Powwow using the shakers and rain sticks they made in art class. Next, the students rotated through different second grade classrooms to participate in crafts relating to the Native Americans including making a pinch pot, sandpainting, making a buffalo skin story, and making an Indian headdress. SOA Students Headed to Bowl GamePosted on: Friday, December 11, 2015Students from the York County School of the Arts (SOA) dance program will be spending part of their winter break in sunny Florida. Twenty-six dancers were selected to perform in the pre-game show and the half-time show at the Russell Athletic Bowl Game on Tuesday, December 29. In addition, the SOA students will dance in a parade through Universal Studios and attend four separate master classes with world renowned choreographers Chuck Maldanado, CiCi Kelley, Derek Mitchell, and Rosero McCoy. Stuff the Bus for WesPosted on: Friday, December 11, 2015York High School students held their second Stuff the Bus for Wes drive this year. They spent a morning collecting donations from other YCSD schools. Donations were collected at York High, Yorktown Middle, Yorktown Elementary and Seaford Elementary schools. All the items donated will eventually be delivered to children at CHKD. YHS students launched their campaign last year to support Wes Pak, a Seaford Elementary School student, who started his CHKD Toys for Tots drive after being diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Read more |
Students Undertake Hour of CodePosted on: Friday, December 11, 2015Students across the York County School Division have been participating in the global Hour of Code events. At Coventry Elementary School, librarian Kim Harris led students in kindergarten through fifth grade in joining millions of students worldwide taking their first steps into the world of coding. Hour of Code is meant to increase student exposure to coding and show students that anyone can code! Learning to code helps to nurture problem-solving skills, logical reasoning and creativity as well as prepare students for 21st century careers. BMES Barnes and Noble Book FairPosted on: Friday, December 04, 2015Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) hosted a book fair at Barnes and Noble on December 1. Some of the activities for the students and families included class performances, cupcake decorating, bookmark making, and story time with teachers. Splat the Cat even came to visit while Kelli Lugo, kindergarten teacher, read a Splat the Cat Christmas story. Read more |
