Future Chefs CompetitionPosted on: Friday, April 01, 2016Students from each elementary school in the division took over the kitchen at York High School on March 31 for the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition. The national initiative, which is in its sixth year, was launched to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while also encouraging them to get active and creative in the kitchen. The cooking challenge began with 250 YCSD elementary students submitting healthy breakfast recipes. Ten students were then selected to participate in the division final event. With the help of cafeteria managers, the students prepared their recipes for a panel of judges that included School Board members Barbara Haywood, Page Minter, and Mark Medford, as well as Division Superintendent Victor Shandor and Chief Operations Officer Carl James. YCSD Teachers of the Year Finalists AnnouncedPosted on: Friday, April 01, 2016York County School Division (YCSD) administrators, members of the York Foundation for Public Education, and representatives from TowneBank surprised three teachers in their classrooms as they announced the finalists for the YCSD TowneBank Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to Tracy Buckley (Mt. Vernon Elementary School), Elizabeth O’Brien (Yorktown Middle School), and Lyndsay Kimbro (Bruton High School). The Teacher of the Year prize patrol, sponsored by TowneBank, included Superintendent Victor Shandor, Chief Academic Officer Stephanie Guy, Education Foundation board members Larry and Cathy Cheney, TowneBank President Brian Skinner and TowneBank Vice-President Sandra Allen. YMS and MVES Battle of the BooksPosted on: Friday, March 25, 2016Yorktown Middle School (YMS) and Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) represented the York Library at the regional Battle of the Books competition held at the Williamsburg Regional Library on March 19. Students competed against teams from Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg. MVES brought home the championship trophy for grades 4-5 division for the second consecutive year. YMS advanced to the final round as well, finishing with seconds place in the grades 6-8 division. Read more |
YCSD Teams Headed to State Odyssey of the Mind TournamentPosted on: Friday, March 25, 2016Two York County School Division teams are headed to the state Odyssey of the Mind Tournament after taking first place at the regional competition, held at the Grafton School Complex on March 19. The Yorktown Middle School team took first place in the Furs, Fins, Feathers and Friends problem, while Magruder Elementary School's team took first place in the Something Fishy problem. Several other YCSD teams earned honors at the regional competition. The state tournament will be held at Menchville High School in Newport News on April 16. Teams that place first and second at the state tournament will advance to the World Finals competition at Iowa State University in late May. Read more |
MVES and TMS Students Celebrate Read Across AmericaPosted on: Friday, March 25, 2016Tabb Middle School (TMS) students recently visited Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) for a special Read Across America Event. The middle school students were matched with classes and spent time reading to the elementary students. York High School Teacher Earns National AwardPosted on: Friday, March 25, 2016The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has named Amy Insley, York High School drama teacher, a 2016 Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher. Fourteen teachers were selected from a pool of nominations received through the Kennedy Center's website. This prestigious national award, and the $10,000 accompanying grant, is designed to recognize American teachers by spotlighting their “extraordinary impact on the lives of students.” Read more |
YCSD Students Advance to National CompetitionPosted on: Friday, March 18, 2016Three York County School Division students earned first place honors at the state level of this year’s PTA Reflections program. The PTA Reflections contest is a national initiative founded in 1969 that encourages students to express themselves through the arts and be rewarded for their effort. The theme of this year’s contest was “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Read more |
Air Force Band visits BMESPosted on: Friday, March 18, 2016On Friday, March 11, the Air Force Heritage Band performed for Bethel Manor Elementary School's (BMES) third-fifth grade students. During the performance, band members described their instruments and taught students about each one. One student participated in an experiment to hear the different sounds a bassoon makes! THS Student Wins Tidewater Science & Engineering FairPosted on: Friday, March 18, 2016Dozens of YCSD students competed in the 65th annual Tidewater Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, March 12. Robin Bai from Tabb High School (THS) and the Governor’s School for Science and Technology (GSTT) won the overall grand prize and will represent the Tidewater region at the 2016 International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona. Skyping AdjectivesPosted on: Friday, March 18, 2016Yorktown Elementary School (YES) students in Amy McCord's second grade class recently participated in an interactive adjective lesson with a second grade classroom in Maine. The students sent descriptions of themselves to each other. Based on the adjectives they used to describe themselves, the students in each had to draw pictures of the other students. During the skyping lesson, students shared their pictures and got to see how close their drawing was to the actual person. Read more |
