All 19 Schools Fully AccreditedPosted on: Friday, September 16, 2016The York County School Division has achieved 100% accreditation for the 2016-17 school year from the Virginia Department of Education. Schools’ accreditation ratings reflect overall SOL passing rates from the previous school year in the four core academic areas of English, math, history and science. Of the 132 school divisions in the state, only 53 have all schools fully accredited this year. Read more |
GBES Teacher Earns National AwardPosted on: Friday, September 16, 2016Carol Bauer, a fourth grade teacher at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES), is the recipient of the National Education Association (NEA) Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence. This highly respected national award is given to a select few teachers each year. A recent Teacher of the Year for GBES, she was nominated by the Virginia Education Association to receive the award. Bauer will travel to Washington, D.C. in February to receive the award and a $10,000 prize at the NEA Foundation Gala. “We are proud to have Carol represent the school division. She is an excellent advocate for both teachers and students,” stated Dr. Stephanie Guy, chief academic officer. Read more |
YCSD National Merit Scholarship SemifinalistsPosted on: Friday, September 16, 2016The York County School Division (YCSD) is pleased to announce that four students have been selected as 2017 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. The program is based upon student performance on the PSAT taken during a student’s junior year. Congratulations to Bruton High School’s Rachel Brotherton, Grafton High School’s Katie Liu and Miroslava Marinova, and York High School’s David Lee. More than 1.4 million students, in more than 22,000 high schools around the country, entered the program by taking the 2013 PSAT. Of those, approximately 16,000 students were named semifinalists and can compete for the 7,500 National Merit Scholarships that together are worth more than $33 million and will be awarded next spring. SBO Student Art ContestPosted on: Friday, June 10, 2016The School Board Office recently unveiled the winners of the Spring YCSD Student Art Contest. The contest is open to all division students, with winners being selected at the elementary and secondary levels. Saige Hetke, a kindergartener at Tabb Elementary School, was awarded the elementary prize for her tiger drawing, while Bruton High School's Katie Grimes earned the secondary prize with her watercolor piece. Both pieces of artwork join a permanent display of student artwork at the School Board Office. Read more |
Girls on the Run Service ProjectPosted on: Friday, June 10, 2016The Girls on the Run (GOTR) club at Dare Elementary School baked and sold $455 worth of baked goods during three after-school functions. The girls wanted to donate the money raised to a local no-kill animal shelter. Recently, students, coaches and parents met at Poquoson Animal Welfare Sanctuary (PAWS) after school and delivered the donation. PAWS operates completely on donations. The girls learned about how this shelter came about and how much money it takes to provide for these cats each day. Everyone was all smiles to see what their hard work did to support the shelter. TMS Donates $1,700 to Local CharityPosted on: Friday, June 10, 2016Tabb Middle School (TMS) students worked to raise awareness on the issue of dog fighting and stop the use of bait dogs. Students researched the issue and measures currently in place and decided the best way for them to help was to raise money for a local dog rescue, XOXO Pet Rescue, to help save as many dogs as they could. Students held multiple fundraisers and raised a total of almost $1,700 to donate to the organization. Read more |
Mon Correspondant FrançaisPosted on: Friday, June 03, 2016Yorktown Middle School (YMS) students in Madame Kaufmann-Perry’s French I and II classes have been corresponding with native students from the French American School of Norfolk (FASN)via letters and a blog through this school year. They were finally able to meet each other in person at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk on Wednesday, June 1, 2016. The field trip was the culminating activity for their Transformative Project-Based Learning entitled Mon CorrespondantFrançais. Students participated in an art scavenger hunt with their pen pals, before presenting, in French and English, the artwork they had researched using the museum’s virtual museum tour option. Yorktown Beach Clean UpPosted on: Friday, June 03, 2016Dare Elementary School’s preschool class strikes again! Carissa Goodnite’sand KarissaRandall’s classes all joined together with the help of parents to clean up the beach in Yorktown. Each class had spent time talking about trash, recycling, and how to keep our community clean and safe. This is the second year the DES preschool classes have taken part in this service project. Everyone wore gloves and carried around big trash bags. After collecting several bags of trash, which were then picked up by York County's maintenance crew, the student’s enjoyed an ice cream treat. TMS Sweeps Kings Dominion Music CompetitionPosted on: Friday, June 03, 2016On Friday, May 13, 2016, the Tabb Middle School (TMS) Band and Choruses competed at the Music in the Parks Festival at Kings Dominion. The TMS Advanced Band, Mixed Choir and Treble Tigers group all received 1st place trophies in their respective divisions. The Advanced Band and Treble Tigers also won the overall awards for best band and choir for the day. And, ultimately, the TMS band and choirs won the coveted “Esprit de Corps” award for their superior behavior and for demonstrating good sportsmanship during the competition. Read more |
