Tabb Middle School FIRSTLego League Claims Regional TitlePosted on: Friday, November 11, 2016Several York County School Division schools took part in Newport News Regional FIRSTLegoLeague Competition this month. The Tabb Middle School (TMS) team placed first in its division, whilethe Grafton Bethel Elementary School team placed second overall in its division. Both teams secured a trip to the state competition in December. The Seaford Elementary School Bulldogs teamearned the Judges’ Award in its division. Throughout the process, team members learned the importance of perseverance as theyused the engineering design process to improve the robots. Theteams honed their research skills and used their knowledge of the scientific method to identify a problem and develop a solution related to the competition theme, Animal Allies. Read more |
Model Water Tower CompetitionPosted on: Friday, November 11, 2016Three Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) students recently entered a model water tower competition at Old Dominion University sponsored by the American Water Works Association. The challenge was to build a water tower within certain design parameters and they were graded in the following categories: structural integrity, cost efficiency, and design ingenuity. The QLMS sixth grade students, Julia Shrieves, Dakota Anderson and Kathleen Richardson, took third place out of 16 teams. The third place prize was a $100 check for their school, which the students were excited to present to Principal Scott Meadows. Read more |
Grafton Bethel Elementary School Takes On Harwood MillPosted on: Friday, October 28, 2016Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) fourth graders enjoyed a field trip to Harwood Mills Reservoir. Each pavilion was transformed into an outdoor classroom to create engaging learning experiences for the students such as a nature walk/scavenger hunt and an erosion/watershed activity. Students also created an iMovie on environmental topics and took row boats onto the reservoir to collect water samples and study what they found. Read more |
Magruder Elementary School Girls Coding ClubPosted on: Friday, October 28, 2016Magruder Elementary School (MES) began hosting an afterschool Girls Coding Club in October. Girls from each fifth grade class have the opportunity to become “resident experts” about computer coding with Sketch and coding controlled robots. These young ladies will then be the coding assistants as the school's education technology facilitator (ETF) brings coding opportunities into each of their fifth grade classrooms during second semester. Bethel Manor Elementary School's Taste of the RegionPosted on: Friday, October 28, 2016Students in Dana Moore's fourth grade class at Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) were introduced to sensory words through a truly tasty classroom experience. The students took part in a culinary tour of Virginia by sampling cheese, apple cider, and peanuts (all VA products and industries) and describe what the product looked like, along with how it felt, smelled and tasted. Yorktown Middle School Stick it to Cancer Field Hockey GamePosted on: Friday, October 28, 2016This year the Yorktown Middle School (YMS) field hockey team played its 7th annual Stick it to Cancer game. The team sells concessions, collects donations and entrance fees all to benefit the American Cancer Society. The YMS Falcons won their game against the Hornsby Hornets and raised $2,100. To date, the team has donated more than $10,000 in support of the American Cancer Society! Read more |
YCSD Band ShowcasePosted on: Friday, October 28, 2016For the second time in as many years, all four York County High School marching bands took the field at once. The division’s Band Expo provides the bands an opportunity to showcase each of their halftime performances on the same night. STEM and Mad Science Day at Yorktown Elementary SchoolPosted on: Friday, October 21, 2016Yorktown Elementary School (YES) students and staff recently participated in schoolwide STEM. Activities that align with grade level SOLs were selected to increase student understanding of the engineering design process, reinforce content, and promote collaboration. Kindergarteners constructed geometric shapes with candy corn and tooth picks. First graders created webs to see how high they could get Spiderman to bounce from the web when dropped from a specified height. Second graders created different shaped sails and tested which sail made model cars travel the farthest. Third graders created cantilever structures. Fourth graders made dragon racers and measured to see which vehicle went the furthest distance. Fifth graders designed lung capacity devices to test their lung capacity and Read more |
Tabb High School Tiger Times VHSL AwardPosted on: Friday, October 21, 2016Tabb High School Tiger Times staff recently attended the Virginia High School League Media Championship Conference at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Students attended a lecture series designed to encourage and enhance their writing skills. The Tabb High newspaper staff, sponsored by Teresa Freyberger, took first place recognition for their print edition of the Tiger Times. The first place standing is based on last year's printed student newspaper. Read more |
