Yorktown Middle School Spelling Bee ChampionPosted on: Friday, December 02, 2016Yorktown Middle School’s (YMS) Mallory Jones will represent the school at the Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on February 18, 2017. The YMS sixth grader survived 17 rounds against 15 other contestants to win the first Yorktown Middle School Spelling Bee. Anna Boyarinova was runner-up. The winner of the Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee will represent our area in the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. Read more |
Waller Mill Elementary School Students Give BackPosted on: Friday, December 02, 2016Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) students in grades K-5 made the walk with canned foods to FISH. FISH is an all-volunteer not-for-profit agency providing help to residents of the greater Williamsburg area. FISH depends entirely upon a caring community for food, clothing, volunteers and financial donations, in order to serve our neighbors in need. Paint the PlowPosted on: Friday, December 02, 2016The York County School Division knows just how much students look forward to a snow day (or two) each winter, and this year they may also be eager to see the crews working to get those roads clear again! That’s because if winter weather hits Hampton Roads this year, motorists will see some colorful snowplows on the roads thanks to students from around the York County School Division. The Virginia Department of Transportation provided the division with several plows in need of a "makeover." Art students from Bruton, Grafton, Tabb and York high schools have used their creativity to turn this non-traditional medium into masterpieces. Read more |
Dare Elementary School Earth Kidd ClubPosted on: Friday, November 18, 2016The Dare Elementary School (DES) Earth Kidd Club headed outside for the first meeting of the school year to closely examining the dirt in the school’s butterfly gardens. Led by their favorite Master Gardener Ms. Chris, fourth grade students collected data on their findings and learned about the plants growing in the gardens as well as what lives in the dirt. PTA Walk-A-Thon CelebrationPosted on: Friday, November 18, 2016Seaford Elementary School’s (SES) Parent Teacher Association,PTA, sponsored its annual Walk-A-Thon in which students wereencouraged to collect pledges for the amount of laps they anticipated they could walk. This year, they raised an all-timehigh of more than $26,000. For exceeding their goal, students were able to silly string Principal Christina Head, Assistant Principal Lisa Jalomoand Board of Supervisor member Chad Green. The PTA raises funds to support SES students and staffas well as enhance the educational experience by providing additional materials and volunteering. Every student walked during the fundraiser and the studentsraised over $17,000. Read more |
Coventry Elementary School FundraiserPosted on: Friday, November 18, 2016Coventry Elementary School (CES) held a fundraiser at Papa Murphy's Take 'N' Bake in Yorktown. Teachers Amy Hall, Amber McCarthy and Principal Paula Sasin volunteered their time and prepared pizzas for customers during this event. They provided service with a smile. Coventry wants to thank the customers that called in and mentioned their school to help raise money and especially Papa Murphy's for their community support. Read more |
Bethel Manor Elementary School Celebrates VeteransPosted on: Friday, November 18, 2016Students in Courtney Brightbill’s second grade classroom at Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) found a “heartfelt” way to thank local veterans in honor of Veterans Day. Students decorated hearts in red, white and blue and wrote thank you messages on the back of each drawing. The drawings and messages were then strung together to create a personalized banner which was donated to the VA hospital to show the students’ gratitude. Read more |
Bring Your Legislator to SchoolPosted on: Friday, November 18, 2016Three representatives from the Virginia General Assembly headed back to school, as building principals, in November. Senator Mamie Locke and Delegates Gordon Helsel and Brenda Pogge were among the 15 participants in the division’s Principal for a Day program who jumped right in to their new duties as principals. They even had the opportunity to help teach in some classrooms by sharing information about the General Assembly as well as election and legislative processes. Guest principals began their day with duties such as helping with student drop-off lines and sharing the morning announcements. Activities then ranged from classroom visits to student and staff meetings - some guest principals even helped run fire drills and awards celebrations. Read more |

Dads at Bethel Manor Elementary School volunteer during classroom lessons, resource, lunch, recess. Sometimes they even serve as helping hand to the custodial staff.
