Bethel Manor Elementary Celebrates Reading and WritingPosted on: Friday, March 10, 2017To celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday and Read Across America Day, Courtney Brightbill's second grade class at Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) made hats like the Cat in the Hat! Then, the students read Dr. Seuss books with buddies in the classroom. The students also started a new unit on persuasive writing. To help students prepare for this unit, students brought in collections of toys and other items from home. They set up the collections for viewing and selected their favorite. The students used this activity to learn how to share an opinion and provide supporting reasons in their writing lessons. Read more |
YCSD Transportation Department HonoredPosted on: Friday, March 10, 2017The York County School Division (YCSD) Transportation Department was recently named a recipient of a 2017 John T. Hanna Award, for excellence in employee safety training. The award is presented annually as part of the “Drive Safe Hampton Roads” program initiated by Concerned Citizens Advocating Traffic Safety organization. The YCSD Transportation Department was nominated under the category of Pupil Transportation Safety. This award is presented to those who encourage, educate, and promote safety in pupil transportation, making a safer ride for both drivers and riders. Read more |
Tabb Middle School Action for Animal Awareness NightPosted on: Friday, March 10, 2017Tabb Middle School (TMS) sixth grade students have been busy researching critical issues facing animals and have worked in teams to design informative, persuasive display boards to bring awareness to the community. Students also solicited donations of animal care items and donated them to the local SPCA. The project culminates with approximately 300 students filling the halls of Tabb Middle at 7 p.m., Thursday March 16, to share their research and help make a difference in the lives of animals. Community members will vote for the most informative, passionate presentation and the winning team’s selected charity will receive all donations collected through a fundraising campaign. Read more |
Odyssey of the Mind ChampionsPosted on: Wednesday, March 08, 2017Three York County School Division teams are headed to the state Odyssey of the Mind Tournament based on their impressive work at the regional competition this past weekend. In the Its Time Omer problem, the Yorktown Middle School team took first place in its division, while the Tabb High team took second place in its division and Queens Lake Middle School won the Odd-A-Bot problem in its division. Trip Back in TimePosted on: Friday, February 24, 2017The fourth grade classes at Bethel Manor Elementary School went back in time on their field trip to Williamsburg this month. The students spent the day experiencing life during Virginia’s colonial period. This experience allowed the students the opportunity to bring what they learn in class to a much higher level, meaning, and understanding. Read more |
School Spirit with a TwistPosted on: Friday, February 24, 2017Schools hold spirit days for students and staff throughout the year for a variety of reasons, but Tabb Middle School put a twist on their spirit day this week. On Thursday, faculty and staff put away their traditional Tabb Tiger orange & black and filled the halls with navy, red and silver to show their support for Grafton High School (GHS) freshman Andrew Stonier. You may recall we shared his story and students' efforts to raise money for the family earlier this month. Tabb Middle raised $1,200 to help Andrew and his family by donning their Clipper wear. Virtual Field TripPosted on: Friday, February 24, 2017All York County School Division elementary schools collaborated to develop a virtual field trip, via Skype, to tour the Maggie Walker National Historic Site in Richmond. Students in more than 40 classrooms in all ten elementary schools went online simultaneously to interact with YCSD teachers who interviewed site staff and toured the building live online. In so doing, students developed their understanding of Maggie Walker's importance as a civil rights activist. Read more |
