School Spirit with a TwistPosted on: Friday, February 24, 2017Schools hold spirit days for students and staff throughout the year for a variety of reasons, but Tabb Middle School put a twist on their spirit day this week. On Thursday, faculty and staff put away their traditional Tabb Tiger orange & black and filled the halls with navy, red and silver to show their support for Grafton High School (GHS) freshman Andrew Stonier. You may recall we shared his story and students' efforts to raise money for the family earlier this month. Tabb Middle raised $1,200 to help Andrew and his family by donning their Clipper wear. Virtual Field TripPosted on: Friday, February 24, 2017All York County School Division elementary schools collaborated to develop a virtual field trip, via Skype, to tour the Maggie Walker National Historic Site in Richmond. Students in more than 40 classrooms in all ten elementary schools went online simultaneously to interact with YCSD teachers who interviewed site staff and toured the building live online. In so doing, students developed their understanding of Maggie Walker's importance as a civil rights activist. Read more |
100th Day of SchoolPosted on: Friday, February 17, 2017Students and teachers are more than halfway through the school year and were delighted to participate in traditions to mark the 100th day of school on Wednesday, February 15. In addition to pretending to be 100 years old, students engaged in various lessons related to the number 100, such as bringing and counting 100 small items; wearing 100th day crowns; stringing necklaces with 100 rings; counting to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s; and doing jumping jacks to 100. Bethel Manor Elementary School Parent UniversityPosted on: Friday, February 17, 2017Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) held a Parent University for the fifth grade parents this month. Parent Universities are held at schools throughout the year to focus on specific ways parents can help support their children’s education. This month’s event at BMES focused on SOL testing and middle school requirements. Parents walked away with a better understanding of end-of-year requirements and ideas to use at home. Read more |
Band Recruitment EffortsPosted on: Friday, February 17, 2017Tabb Middle School (TMS) band students visited Bethel Manor Elementary, Mt. Vernon Elementary and Tabb Elementary schools over the last two weeks to give the younger students a taste of the middle school band program prior to the rising sixth grade Course Registration Information Night on February 16. Small groups of student musicians played short, easily recognizable songs during each school's morning program and added a quick plug to consider joining the band program. TMS students were proud to represent the program and are receiving accolades on their performances. Read more |
Breakout EDU for LearningPosted on: Friday, February 17, 2017Grafton Middle School (GMS) French students recently completed a Breakout EDU activity in class. Breakout EDU, a concept similar to the popular Escape Room game, requires participants to solve a series of puzzles and locate clues to open a locked box within a specified time. For each activity solved, students earn the combinations for locks on the box. GMS French students were able to complete all their French activities to save their teacher’s children from the Queen of Hearts. Breakout EDU is used to create ultra-engaging learning games for students. These games teach teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, core academic subjects, and troubleshooting by presenting participants with challenges that ignite their natural drive to problem-solve. The Arts at Bethel Manor Elementary SchoolPosted on: Friday, February 10, 2017The Virginia Opera visited Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) last week. The actors performed the play "The Three Little Pigs" for students in first through fourth grade. The play was interactive and the students were involved throughout the performance. Mt. Vernon Elementary School Power of Persuasion WritingPosted on: Friday, February 10, 2017Fifth graders at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) recently participated in the school’s first Power of Persuasion Writing Fair. As part of the division’s new literacy model, fifth grade students craft a persuasive essay during the second quarter of the school year. To celebrate the conclusion of their writing this quarter, the students created a fair where they could share their writing sample, give a speech, or share a Sway presentation to fellow students, parents and community members. Some of their powerful arguments supported the need for middle school tennis teams, the need to always wear bike helmets, and various health-related topics. Read more |
Great Kindness ChallengePosted on: Friday, February 10, 2017Elementary students across York County took part in the annual Great Kindness Challenge in January. The Great Kindness Challenge is a national initiative that many school systems across the nation have adopted. The mantra is One Week. One Checklist. Infinite Happiness. Kim Stratton's fifth grade class at Seaford Elementary School elected to participate by creating “Choose Kind” t-shirts on which each student wrote something about their classmate. She says the best part was when the kids were able to see all the nice words their classmates used to describe them. Read more |
First Graders Plant Flower BulbsPosted on: Friday, February 03, 2017According to the groundhog we’re going to get six more weeks of winter, but Mt. Vernon Elementary School first graders are ready for spring. Taking advantage of warmer weather this week, the students took turns planting daffodil and tulip bulbs in the flower beds around the school. They are hoping the groundhog is wrong because they want the warm weather to help their newly-planted flowers grow! Read more |
