YCSD Teacher of the Year AnnouncedPosted on: Friday, April 21, 2017We are pleased to announce that this year's Teacher of Year for the York County School Division is Tabb Middle School's Theresa Guthrie! Dr. Victor Shandor, along with Board member Jimmy Richardson, school division staff, TowneBank Vice-President Sandra Allen and York Foundation for Public Education board members surprised Guthrie with the news this week. The YCSD Teacher of the Year program is sponsored by TowneBank through the York Foundation for Public Education. Magruder Elementary School Career CafePosted on: Friday, March 31, 2017Fifth graders at Magruder Elementary School have been signing up to spend their lunch with a working professional each Tuesday in February and March. Guest speakers from the fields of museum curation, photography, engineering and banking have visited the school. They share what classes and skills are important in preparing for their chosen career, some of their favorite parts of their respective careers, and answer student questions. Read more |
Yorktown Elementary School Visit to Mariners' MuseumPosted on: Friday, March 31, 2017Yorktown Elementary School (YES) third grade students visited the Mariners' Museum for a fun and engaging field trip! The students participated in "The Age of Exploration" program which discussed the different explorers, their contributions, where they sailed from, and what they found on their voyages. The students rotated throughout the museum to different stations where they interacted with maps, spices, and heard about life at sea. Read more |
Future Chefs CompetitionPosted on: Friday, March 31, 2017Students from each elementary school in the division took over the kitchen at York High School on March 30 for the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition. The national initiative, which is in its seventh year, was launched to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while also encouraging them to get active and creative in the kitchen. The cooking challenge began with hundreds of YCSD elementary students submitting healthy comfort food recipes. Ten students were then selected to participate in the division’s final event. With the help of cafeteria managers, the students prepared their recipes for a panel of judges that included School Board member Mark Medford, Division Superintendent Victor Shandor and Chief Operations Officer Carl James. Authors Inspiring Waller Mill Elementary School StudentsPosted on: Friday, March 31, 2017Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) students have been learning a lot about writing lately, from some experts. Sarah Sullivan, a Williamsburg resident who has written several books including Once Upon a Baby Brother, taught students about getting their work published. Michelle Nelson-Schmidt, author to six children's books including Jonathan James and the Whatif Monster, spoke to students and had them join with a million others in a pinky promise to follow the voice in their heart telling them to live the magic of their dreams and to think positive thoughts. Tabb High School Student Accepted into Journalism CampPosted on: Friday, March 31, 2017Malia Rosburg, a Tabb High School (THS) junior, will have the opportunity to study journalism at Newsroom By the Bay, a week-long camp at Stanford University in California, over the summer. Newsroom By the Bay is a camp whose goal is to grow students' love of journalism and educate them on the ins and the outs of the profession. Students are able to experience the city of San Francisco, the location of Stanford University, as well as get a glimpse of the college life by living on campus. Students will learn from many highly qualified teachers and educators who have years of experience in the field of journalism. York High School Army STEM TruckPosted on: Friday, March 31, 2017The United States Army "took over" Bailey Field recently to show York High School (YHS) students how science, engineering, math and technology are used by the military. The Army STEM Truck is a mobile outreach program that puts students in a scenario where they can put their knowledge and problem solving abilities to the test. More than 750 YHS students were able to experience the interactive exhibit, which is the largest group of students to ever participate. Read more |
Students Exploring SolidsPosted on: Friday, March 24, 2017Students in Lisa McCarthy's third grade class at Mt. Vernon Elementary School created three dimensional solids using marshmallows and toothpicks. Students engaged in cooperative learning and conversation as they built square pyramids, cubes and other three dimensional figures. Read more |
YCSD Student Art ContestPosted on: Friday, March 24, 2017The four winners of the School Board Office (SBO) Student Art Contest were revealed in a special ceremony on March 17. Nearly one hundred students from 15 schools entered the annual contest this year. Congratulations to Karmare Brownlee, fourth grade student at Bethel Manor Elementary School; Jukera Turnage, fourth grade student at Seaford Elementary; Jacob Turner, 11th grade student at Tabb High; and Katherine Wolinski, 11th grade student at York High. The students' artwork joins a permanent display of student artwork at the School Board Office. Read more |
READBoxes at Tabb Middle SchoolPosted on: Friday, March 24, 2017Library Media Specialist Nanci Diggs has brought READboxes to Tabb Middle School (TMS). A READbox is a crate of books specifically selected for a particular unit of study. The crate contains a mixture of nonfiction, fiction, graphic novels, novels in prose, and poetry. TMS teachers make a READbox request based on a unit of study and the crate remains in the classroom for the duration of the unit. The books are utilized for research in the classroom and provide silent reading material for students who want to learn more about lesson topics. Students can check out the book to take home. This is a reading across the curriculum tool that makes it easy to expand classroom lessons for curious students. Read more |
