Virginia Purple Star DesignationPosted on: Monday, October 29, 2018The Virginia Department of Education recently announced that four YCSD schools are among the first in the state to earn Purple Star designation. The Virginia Purple Star Designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Elementary Teachers Engage StudentsPosted on: Friday, October 26, 2018Elementary teachers across the division are taking advantage of the season to engage YCSD students in hands-on activities. At Waller Mill Elementary, pumpkins have been decorated based on student's favorite storybook character. At Dare Elementary, first graders used pumpkins for as their exploration tool for a special STEAM day set of activities. Students used pumpkins to learn about science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Read more |
York River Academy Courtyard BenchPosted on: Thursday, October 25, 2018This week, members of the York County Beautification committee, along with Sheila Noll from the York County Board of Supervisors and Barb Dunbar, Master Gardener from Virginia Cooperative Extension, presented York River Academy with a bench for the school's courtyard. The bench was made from recycled plastic bags through a Trex recycling program. York River Academy was the first school in the division to receive a bench through this program. YRA collected many plastic bags in the 2017-18 school year to earn the honor. York River Academy continues to collect plastic bags to aid in the creating of future benches for other schools in York County. Principal Walt Cross shared, "It is our honor to be environmental stewards and show our students the impacts of properly recycling everyday grocery bags." Read more |
Coventry Elementary Students Featured on 13News NowPosted on: Wednesday, October 24, 2018The artwork of some Coventry Elementary School students was featured on 13News Now's morning show this week. Art teacher Gerri Klepeisz developed a project for students to who have spare time in their art period to create a "Kids Care" card. On one side is the student's own artwork and on the other are encouraging words for the recipient. So far this school year, they have sent approximately 500 cards to North Carolina students affected by Hurricane Florence and plan to send more to students in Florida impacted by Hurricane Michael. New Principal for THSPosted on: Tuesday, October 23, 2018The York County School Division is pleased to announce that Paul Rice has been approved by the School Board to serve as principal of Tabb High School beginning January 2. He will replace interim principal Royce Hart. Mr. Rice has nearly 20 years’ experience in education, having begun his teaching career in Hanover County. In 2003, he joined the York County School division as a history teacher at York High School. During his time at York High School he taught US History, IB History, and IB Geography. He has spent the last two years as principal of Grafton Middle School and has previously served as an assistant principal at Queens Lake Middle School and York High School. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, he earned his master’s degree from the College of William & Mary. Read more |
YCSD Make-Up Day AnnouncementPosted on: Tuesday, October 23, 2018The York County School Division has adjusted the 2018-19 school calendar to make up missed instructional time due to hurricanes Florence and Michael. Monday, November 12, 2018 is now a regular instructional day for all students. Wednesday, December 19, 2018 will now be a full instructional day for all students. Read more |

YCSD Make-Up Day SurveyPosted on: Tuesday, October 16, 2018As you know, YCSD students have missed five days of learning this school year due to Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. The division has extended one school day (Dec. 19) to address some of this lost instructional time and is now reviewing additional make-up options. We would like your input before the superintendent makes further adjustments to the 2018-19 school calendar. Division leaders have identified three possible options to schedule a full school day and provide students with important academic support during the first semester – Monday, Nov. 12, Wednesday, Nov. 21, or Thursday, December 20. Please complete a brief online survey by 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18., to share your preference as to which day the division should use as a make-up day. Makeup plans will be announced by phone, email, and all social media platforms. A revised calendar will also be posted on the school division website and all school websites. Read more |
YCSD Weekend ActivitiesPosted on: Friday, October 12, 2018While Dominion Energy has been able to restore power to all but six of the schools impacted by Tropical Storm Michael, all activities and events for today and tonight remain canceled. At this time the following schools remain without power - Bruton High, Queens Lake Middle, Dare Elementary, Magruder Elementary, and the Grafton Complex and will remain closed for activities until power is restored.
