Second grade classroom at Bethel Manor Elementary School was transformed into an operating room last week as students performed "text surgery." This hands-on lesson had the students "operate" to identify the different text features that would help their "patients" get well. Students located the features in various nonfiction texts and performed the surgery. Students also wrote personal narratives about a time they had to go to the hospital or were sick. Lastly, students helped their number patients by taking xrays (drawing pictorial representations) and checking symptoms (identifying greater and less than numbers). All of the "surgeons" enjoyed an engaging and interactive day at BMES!
