YHS NASA HUNCH ProgramPosted on: Friday, March 08, 2019Congratulations to York High School students David Patterson, TyeScheidegger, Ngan Quach, and Andrew Stewart. These four YorkHigh School students have been invited to travel to Houston, Texas in April to present an engineering project to NASA engineers and astronauts as part of their participation in the NASA HUNCH Program. The HUNCH program partners NASA mentors with students around the country and challenges students with fabricatingreal-world products for NASA as they apply their science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills as well as learning to work in teams and think creatively. Patterson and Scheidegger developed a clamp system for the ARED (advanced resistive exercise device), which is an exercise machine on the International Space Station (ISS) used to help keep astronauts healthy in the zero-g environment. Tabb High School Modified LockdownPosted on: Wednesday, March 06, 2019Shortly before noon today, Tabb High School reported receiving threatening phone calls. The calls were in relation to last week’s incident at Tabb High School which was captured on video and spread nationwide via social media. As a precaution, the school immediately initiated a modified lockdown. After-school activities were also canceled. We are working closely with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office as law enforcement investigates the phone calls. The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office provided additional deputies at Tabb High today to assist in maintaining a safe and orderly environment in our school, and additional deputies will be onsite tomorrow as well, simply as a precaution and reassurance to families. As staff continue to work with law enforcement, we would like to ask our community’s assistance in this matter as well. Tabb Middle School Poetry Slam & ContestPosted on: Friday, February 22, 2019The Tabb Middle School annual Poetry Slam was held in the school’s library media center this week. This year, in addition to reading poetry, the school added a poetry contest. While a few students elected to read poetry selections from library books, the majority chose to read their original poems. Students enthusiastically read their works and beamed with pride seeing staff and peers' reactions to their original creations. Eliya Friedler (7th grade), won first place in the contest with her poem entitled “From Holocaust to Revival”. Carly McMinn (6th grade) won second place with her poem entitled “In My Mind”, and Preston James (6th grade) won third place with his poem entitled “The River of Life”. Read more |

School Board Member Resignation and Vacancy AnnouncementPosted on: Wednesday, February 06, 2019York County School Board member Michael Anderson has announced that he will resign from the School Board, and will not seek re-election, due to increased work responsibilities associated with a recent promotion. His resignation will be effective today, Wednesday, February 6. The County School Board of York County, Virginia is now soliciting letters of interest and resumes from persons who wish to be considered to fill a vacancy on the Board for District 2. The appointment will be for an interim period, beginning once the new board member is sworn in and continuing through the November election process. Read more |
YCSD Instructional Material ReviewPosted on: Tuesday, February 12, 2019The York County School Division is currently conducting an Instructional Material Review (IMR) process for K-12 History/ Social Science. AP Physics, and American Sign Language II. All textbooks, teacher resources, student materials and electronic materials are reviewed and adopted through this process. Materials that correlate highly with the Virginia Standards of Learning, YSCD curriculum, and The College Board were targeted for the review process. At this time, parents and community stakeholders are invited to review, and provide feedback, on the materials recommended for adoption. The public preview day is scheduled for Tuesday, February 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the YCSD School Board Office in conference rooms A & B. Read more |
Semester Exam Review ForumsPosted on: Thursday, January 31, 2019The York County School Division is hosting four parent forums in February to discuss proposed changes to student assessments, specifically midterm and final exams, in high school credit courses. Over the last year, the division has gathered stakeholder feedback regarding current exam practices. Teacher, student and parent feedback on midterm exams was gathered through an online survey in the spring of 2018. High school teachers have also conducted additional reviews and discussions on both midterm and final exams. As a result of this extensive review, division and school staff have recommended moving from semester exams to quarterly assessments beginning with the 2019-20 school year. The parent forums are being held to share the new assessment strategy and collect additional feedback for the development of the new assessment plan. Read more |
EngagedIN YCSDPosted on: Tuesday, January 29, 2019The York County School Division is launching a new program designed to strengthen our business and community partnerships in the areas of career awareness, exploration, and preparedness. The EngagedIN YCSD program aims to connect interested parents, community members and businesses with schools to share their career experiences and expertise with students. EngagedIN volunteers will help students understand the connection between school and real-world work and careers. There are multiple ways for individuals (working or retired) and businesses to help YCSD students make these Career Connections. To become involved, simply complete the EngagedIN registration form to provide your contact information, career field info, engagement interests, and availability. GMS Principal AppointedPosted on: Tuesday, December 18, 2018The York County School Division is pleased to announce that Tianna Anthony has been approved by the School Board to serve as principal of Grafton Middle School beginning January 2. She will replace Paul Rice as he assumes his new duties as principal at Tabb High. Prior to joining the York County School Division in 2015, she worked in Hampton City Schools as a middle school teacher in both language arts and history. She has also served as a summer academy principal in both York County and Hampton. Mrs. Anthony earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Hampton University and her master’s degree in EducationalLeadership from Old Dominion University. Read more |
