Yorktown Middle Begins Recycling Program

Students at Yorktown Middle School (YMS) gathered to decorate and distribute boxes for a school-wide recycling program. Art instructor, Danielle Vallino is working with the Middle Years Programme area of Interaction: Community & Service, encouraged students to serve their school community while also having an impact on the environment of the world-wide community. YMS, an International Baccalaureate candidate school looks forward to expanding service activities throughout the local area. Read more



Virginia Board of Education Awards York County Schools

The Virginia Board of Education awarded seven York County School Division schools the 2010 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) incentive program that encourages advanced learning and achievement in public schools. Bethel Manor Elementary, Coventry Elementary, Grafton Bethel Elementary, Mount Vernon Elementary, Tabb Elementary, Tabb High and Waller Mill Elementary Schools were among 288 schools from 15 school divisions that earned the award. The board also awarded four York County School Division schools the 2010 Virginia Board of Education’s Competence to Excellence Award. The schools are recognized for having met all state and federal benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and are making progress toward the goals of the governor and the board. Read more



Seaford Elementary Citizens of the Month

Seaford Elementary School formally recognized students from each class for the month of January. After nominations from staff and consideration, the students chosen are those who naturally demonstrate a caring, helpful attitude toward others and their school environment. This month's winners are as follows: Kindergarten: Robert Cunningham, Atharv Achurya, Micaela Brown, and Dylan Hunter. 1st Grade: Haley Humphries, Emily Eastwood, Savannah Reed, James Kuykendall and Cam Edwards. 2nd Grade: Hayden Head, Marco Rivero, Logan Kirkwood and Olivia Russell. 3rd Grade: Jake Verry, Ben Wagner, Jack Weidman and Cameron Dunbar. 4th Grade: Jacob Shelhorse, Justine Collier, Reid Winer, Jordan Usselman and Claire Harris. 5th Grade: Joey Shematek, Colton Young, Ryan Grimmett and Adia Wyatt. Edible Maps

To enhance mapping skills, first grade students created edible maps in class at Seaford Elementary School. The maps were made on a tortilla, with chocolate chips as mountains, a Hershey bar as the school building, blue icing as the pond, raisins as houses and broccoli as trees. Students made their maps on a board in whole groups and then placed the items on the tortilla using the directions of north, south, east and west. Read more

Yorktown Middle Hosts Community Coffee

Yorktown Middle School (YMS) will host a Community Coffee on February 2 from 9 – 11 a.m. in the YMS Media Center. Discussion topics include: Positive Responses to School Bullying, Defining What It Means to be a YMS Student and A Look at Academic Technology that Parents and Students Can Access from Home. York High Welcomes the Class of 2011 into the IB Diploma Programme

Members of the York High School International Baccalaureate (IB) Class of 2011 were officially welcomed into the Diploma Programme at the annual IB Pinning and Graduation Ceremony in January. Each student was pinned by an IB graduate from the Class of 2009, prior to pledging to uphold the academic and ethical standards of the IB Organization. Congratulatory remarks were offered by Dr. Eric Williams, Superintendent of the York County School Division, and welcomed into the programme by Antonia Fox, York High Principal, and Michelle Cihak, IB Coordinator. York High Awards International Baccalaureate Diplomas to the Class of 2009

The York High School International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme awarded diplomas and certificates to the IB Class of 2009. The diplomas and certificates were awarded by the IB Organization in July 2009, based on each student's performance on the six IB examinations, internal assessments, extended essay, and Theory of Knowledge assessment, as well as completion of at least 150 Creativity Action Service hours. The Class of 2009 went well beyond the requirements, accumulating over 14,000 hours of Creativity Action Service and obtaining over $1.1 million in scholarship money. Additionally, the coveted York High Medallion was presented to Maeve Hoyt for achieving the highest scores on her IB examinations. Congratulations to the members of the Class of 2009. Read more



WATCH D.O.G.S. Kick Off

Yorktown Middle School (YMS) kicks off the WATCH D.O.G.S.® (Dads Of Great Students) Program with the “Dads and Kids Pizza Night” on January 28 at Yorktown Middle School from 6 - 7 p.m. WATCH D.O.G.S.® is the safe schools initiative of the National Center for Fathering (www.fathers.com). It was created in response to the Jonesboro, Arizona school shooting in 1998, and has spread to more than 800 schools in over 30 states. Volunteers are invited to sign up to spend one day this year serving as a positive male role model and helping increase a sense of security in the building. Tabb High Student Receives Prize

Congratulations to Chelsea Nobles of Tabb High School (THS) for winning second prize in the Virginia Career Education Foundation contest. Chelsea received a digital camera and Lynn Pitchford, a teacher at THS, received a cash prize of $50 for having the most students provide correct answers in the contest. The contest for the foundation received 374 entries from across the state. Read more
