York County Student Helps With Coat Drive

Jessi Volkers, an eighth grade student at Yorktown Middle School, volunteered at the Hampton Roads Harley Davidson store assisting with their annual coat drive. The store collected 655 jackets to be donated to the local shelters of Newport News. Monica Whitmore, Operations Manager at the Harley Davidson store said, “It is young people like Jessi that make a true difference in our community.” Read more

Yorktown Middle Shows International Flair

Calling upon their Spanish language skills, along with their human ingenuity, students in Nancy Feigenbaum's sixth grade Middle Years Program Spanish class at Yorktown Middle School immersed themselves in Hispanic culture. Joined by a team of parent volunteers, students researched and cooked cultural delights, including yucca, flan and churros. In between cooking and sampling, students cut crepe paper in the style of "papel picado," a traditional Mexican folk art, and created a Spanish language menu. This exercise provided a fun application of students' cultural and linguistic knowledge. Read more



Dresses for Dreams Double Duty

The Tabb High School’s Fashion Marketing Program is collecting dresses to be donated to a Trunk Sale held by the Norfolk Tides Baseball Club. Tabb High collected gently used formal dresses from students and staff to be sold at extremely low prices. The Trunk Sale will be held on Saturday March 20th at Harbor Park - 150 Park Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23510. All proceeds from the sale will in turn go to the Tides Youth Baseball Fund to help offset expenses associated with attending clinics and tournaments. Read more



Help for Haiti

The eighth grade students in the Queens Lake Middle School Global Studies classes became very concerned about Haiti, a ‘developing country’ which was devastated by the earthquake last month. Since the most immediate way to help is the donation of money, the students were in gear to collect money during the lunch shifts for a week. With everyone’s help, over $400 was collected and contributed to Carol Scott, the Executive Director of the York-Poquoson Red Cross, to be donated to Haiti. Read more



Tabb Middle Receives Recycling Grant

Tabb Middle School's Student Council Association has secured a grant to cover the cost of a school-wide recycling program which began in January. The school will recycle the same items that York County residents currently recycle at home. Each classroom will have its own recycle bin and large red trash cans have been placed in the cafeteria to collect recyclable items from the lunch blocks. Read more

French Class Celebrated La Chandeleur

Students studying French I at Yorktown Middle School celebrated the French tradition of La Chandeleur by learning to make crêpes. Similar to the tradition of Groundhog Day, where an animal prognosticates the weather, La Chandeleur uses crêpes as an indicator of what is to come in the crêpe-maker's future. Students in Isabel Galvez's class cooked their own crêpes and learned the language and culture associated with this holiday. Read more

YCSD’s Chief Academic Officer Receives Award

The Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership (EPPL) course faculty and staff, and the School of Education at the College of William and Mary have chosen Dr. Lucia Sebastian, Chief Academic Officer at YCSD to receive the Jo Lynne DeMary award for 2010. The prestigious award is given in recognition of distinguished leadership and contributions to the field of education. The award is named for the first recipient, Dr. Jo Lynne DeMary, an alumnus of William and Mary and the first female State Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Dr. Sebastian will receive the award at the EPPL Alumni Breakfast on February 18, 2010. Congratulations! Read more
