Dr. Shandor and chief officers also provided an update on the division’s Return to School plan this evening. Since September 29, the division has gradually returned students to school in the Hybrid Model, maintaining safe operations even as case levels began to rise. This has established confidence in the effectiveness of the adopted mitigation strategies in our buildings as well as our staff and students’ adherence to those protocols. Read more

As you know, the division scheduled a temporary shift to remote learning for this week, just as we did the week after Thanksgiving, in order to assess the impact of COVID-19 on our school operations. Over Winter Break and this week, division staff have conducted extensive contact tracing, evaluated staffing availability at each school, and assessed our ability to resume in-person learning safely through implementation of our mitigation strategies. Last week, Governor Northam enacted new restrictions in Virginia to help stem the spread of COVID-19. In doing so, he stressed that the new Executive Order does not change anything for schools. He further acknowledged that school is the best place for students and pledged that state leaders will continue working with local leaders to provide information needed to make decisions at the local level. The York County School Division remains committed to providing in-person instruction for all students within the guidelines and realities of a global pandemic. TMS Student Honored as Congressional App Challenge Finalist

Lucie Cox is the youngest finalist in the Region 2 Second Annual Congressional App Challenge. Lucie and other regional finalists were recognized by Representative Elaine Luria during a virtual award ceremony on December 6, 2020. Participants strived to create a high quality app that is creative and implementable while demonstrating excellence in programming skills. Lucie, an eighth grader at TMS, designed an app through Code.org to raise awareness of butterfly habitat loss. Read more

Report cards for the first nine weeks will be posted online in Aspen on Wednesday, November 18. This new date was established due to the network interruption that occurred at the end of the quarter as students were submitting work and teachers were finalizing grades. Paper copies of report cards will NOT be issued, though parents can print a copy from Aspen or contact their child’s school to request a copy. Read more

Over the last few weeks, the York County School Division has implemented the first stages of our Return to School plan, which guides the work of moving from mandatory school closures in March to having students and staff back in their classrooms. This Thursday, November 5, students in grades 4 and 5 will begin the Hybrid model as scheduled. Next Monday, November 9, we will also welcome sixth grade students back to our middle schools. While ninth grade students were also tentatively scheduled to return next week, we will not be able to meet that target date for our high schools. Read more

In August, the division adjusted the school calendar to include Tuesday, November 3, as a regular school day. As November 3 is also Election Day, the division will enact a one-hour delay for the Hybrid Model to reduce the possibility of traffic and congestion near polling locations during the early morning hours. Student drop-off and bus routes will run one hour later than normal and Hybrid Model students learning from home on Tuesdays should login for their morning meetings one hour later than normal. Over the last two weeks students have begun returning to our schools, following the Hybrid Schedule for in-person learning. Staff are eagerly preparing for our second and third grade students to return next Monday, October 19. This evening, Dr. Shandor and senior staff presented new tentative, target dates for bringing more students safely onto our campuses. Read more

The York County School Board will hold its next monthly meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, September 28 at York Hall. While this meeting is open to the public and public comments will be welcomed as part of the meeting, please be aware seating will be limited as physical distancing and other mitigation strategies will be in place. The meeting will be broadcast live on YCSD-TV (Cox Cable channel 47 and Verizon channel 39) and will be made available on YouTube within two business days. Read more



YMS Student Recognized in Broadcom MASTERS Competition

Please join #TeamYCSD in congratulating Michael Herath, a student at Yorktown Middle School. Michael was recently recognized as one of the top 300 competitors in the 10th annual Broadcom MASTERS competition, the nation’s premier science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competition for middle school students.
