Cinderella Cast Entertains Grafton BethelPosted on: Friday, April 13, 2012Cast members from Grafton High School's (GHS) Cinderella performed a few songs for Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) fourth and fifth graders during lunch to encourage them to attend the performance of Cinderella. Dr. Williams Featured In District Administrator MagazinePosted on: Friday, April 13, 2012Eric Williams, Ed.D. was featured in this month’s edition of District Administrator magazine regarding the use of twitter for professional learning. The following is a quote from the article: “Eric Williams, superintendent of York County (Va.) School Division, suggests administrators make small and tangible goals for themselves when first beginning on Twitter, such as spending 10 minutes each day reading resources shared on Twitter, retweeting five tweets, and contributing three times per week. ‘What’s great about Twitter is it’s an opportunity for people to contribute and check their titles at the door. It doesn’t matter if you’re the superintendent of a medium-sized district or a hug district; there isn’t a brick-and-mortar hierarchy. You’re open to communicate with anyone.’ ” Read more |
Pi Day at Grafton Middle!Posted on: Thursday, March 29, 2012On March 14, Pi Day, students participated in various activities to prove that circumference divided by diameter of different circular sizes will be approximately 3.14. Maggie Hissam and Steven Reese used Oreos, M & M's, and Twizzlers in Deborah Honeycutt's classroom at Grafton Middle School (GMS) to help them prove that no matter how big or small the circle, Pi is about 3.14. Tabb High Fashion Show for a CausePosted on: Thursday, March 29, 2012Tabb High School's (THS) Marketing Department invites you to their 4th Annual Fashion Show for a Cause. The cause this year is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honor of one of our current fashion students, Amanda Varnes, and in memory of Dale Lively Challoner. The show is on Thursday April 26th at 6:30pm in the Tabb High School (THS) Auditorium in Yorktown, Virginia. It will consist of a wide range of styles in clothing, music, and inspiration. The theme this year is Fashion Cliques and will also include a formal wear portion of the show to showcase different styles and trends for prom. Yorktown Middle Prepares Packages for Soldiers in AfghanistanPosted on: Thursday, March 29, 2012The Yorktown Middle School (YMS) Military Support Group (MSG), Young Men of Significance, and representatives from the Doughboy paintball team packaged Easter treats for an Military Police (MP) battalion stationed in Afghanistan and toiletries for Army personnel from Virginia newly stationed in Afghanistan. This is the fourth military mailing that has united the clubs in support of Operation Homefront. Julie Collins sponsors the MSG. Donna Myers sponsors YMS. Oil Spill Clean UpPosted on: Thursday, March 29, 2012York High School (YHS) students were challenged by the CHROME Club to clean up an oil spill in the lab as efficiently and rapidly as possible. The hands-on activity engaged all participants as they combined engineering skills and science to solve the problem presented and save the environment. Read more |
Heather V. Ulsh, Middle School Technology Educator of the Year 2012Posted on: Thursday, March 29, 2012Heather Ulsh has learned how to take advantage of the "latest and greatest" tools to keep her eighth grade math students engaged. Using GPS systems, she created a scavenger hunt on the football field to help students review for the SOL test. Students used Animoto, Glogster, MovieMaker, Toondoo, Blogs and wikispaces to learn the essential vocabulary of math. And, if students are always on Facebook, why not take advantage of that as well. Ms. Ulsh created two Facebook groups to help students better understand algebra and Geometry. These have also been shared with the other math teachers in the school. For her creative and fun uses of technology to increase interest and knowledge in math, Heather Ulsh is this year's Middle School Technology Educator of the Year. Read more |
Students Dance the Day AwayPosted on: Friday, March 23, 2012Richard Winfree, music teacher and Teacher of the Year from Dare Elementary, leads his students as they learn to dance on the blacktop at Dare. Students and teachers are taking advantage of outdoor areas on these beautiful spring days as they wait for the renovation of the main building to be completed. Mr. Winfree was awarded a grant from the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. that allowed him to purchase materials for a multi-cultural dance exploration unit of study. Read more |
