YCSD Awarded $2.5 Million Federal DoDEA GrantPosted on: Thursday, July 26, 2012The York County School Division has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Educational Partnership to strengthen family-school-community relationships and enhance student achievement for military connected students. The grant will fund efforts to improve student achievement in STEM and reading. This initiative features performance tasks that integrate digital tools and allows students to change the world through service learning and entrepreneurship. Students bring their own technology to school to learn, collaborate and work to make a difference locally, nationally and globally. Read more |
Newport News Reading Council Honors Two York County EmployeesPosted on: Tuesday, July 24, 2012Kathryn Patterson was named Administrator of the Year for the Newport News Reading Council. This award recognizes Kathryn’s accomplishments in professional development for reading specialists, collaboration with classroom teachers, and management of the Title I program. Dee Pinder of Bethel Manor Elementary School was named Reading Para-Professional of the Year. Known for her dedication to students, Dee takes the initiative to seek professional growth opportunities and additional resources for reading interventions. Read more |

Tabb Middle School Awarded National Yearbook Program of ExcellencePosted on: Monday, July 02, 2012The Tabb Middle School (TMS) Yearbook Staff and Mrs. Elizabeth Mitchell, teacher at TMS, were awarded the National Yearbook Program of Excellence for the 2011-2012 school year. This award was developed by Jostens to recognize schools that create an inclusive yearbook, generate school engagement and successfully meet all deadlines for the creation of the yearbook. QLMS Makes Donation to Williamsburg Hopsice HousePosted on: Thursday, June 21, 2012The Queens Lake Middle School National Junior Honor Society sponsored a school-wide collection of donations for the Williamsburg Hopsice House during the month of June. Students and parents of Queens Lake Middle School donated items from the Hopsice House wish list and members of the QLMS National Junior Honor Society delivered those donations on June 13, 2012. States of Matter with Tabb ElementaryPosted on: Thursday, June 21, 2012Rising sixth graders from Tabb Elementary School (TES) recently visited the Jefferson Lab. They performed hands-on research into the states of matter. One of their favorite experiments was Oobleck, which they decided was neither a solid nor a liquid, but as their instructor told them a colloidal suspension. Another experiment fostered team work as the students designed and built boats. Read more |
Le Grand Concours Participants from Yorktown MiddlePosted on: Friday, June 15, 2012This past March, all Yorktown Middle School (YMS) 7th and 8th graders enrolled in French participated in Le Grand Concours- the National French contest, for the first time at Yorktown Middle School (YMS). This exam is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). Students in every state in the country, as well as many abroad, participate in the contest. Read more |
