YFPE Grant Aids in Microscope Lab

The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. Technology grant allowed the science department at York High to purchase video screen microscopes. The microscopes were being used by students to calculate the size of a cell and the number of cells in one grain of yeast. The microscopes will allow the students to collaborate more during microscope labs. In addition, students also used the SD card function and took digital photos for a photography project. Seaford Students Reach Out to Sandy Hook Elementary

Seaford Elementary pre-schoolers made snowflakes to send to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut. Sandy Hook's PTA will be using these snowflakes to transform the hallways of their temporary school building into a winter wonderland. The children also wrote their names in a card to send along with the snowflakes! Read more



Decorating Gingerbread Houses at YES

All five first grade classes at Yorktown Elementary School celebrated the holiday season by rotating classes, making gingerbread crafts, listening to variations of the gingerbread stories, and tasting samples of gingerbread. As a culmination to the activities, all students decorated their own gingerbread houses to take home. Read more



Tabb Middle School Students Visit York Convalescent

As part of their transformative project, Lisa Spruill’s Public Speaking class researched what life was like in the 40’s and 50’s. Based on their research, they wrote a set of questions to the residents at the York Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center. After the field trip, the students returned to the library to type up the information that they collected from their interviews and presented the findings to their classmates. Read more



Donation to Yorktown Elementary

In the spirit of giving for the holiday season, Patrick Walsh and his company, The Vacation Channel, raised money for a family in need in the Hampton Roads area. He created a raffle contest at his company’s annual holiday party and collected $220 to donate to a family at Yorktown Elementary Math Science Technology Magnet School in York County. Patrick is pictured presenting a check to his fiancé, Kendal Fuoti, and some of her fifth grade students at Yorktown Elementary. Read more



Seaford Annual Sing-A-Long

First Grade Goes Grinch

First graders at Seaford Elementary celebrated Grinch Day on December 18, 2012. The day incorporated fun and learning! The students rotated centers which included: measuring the Grinch with non-standard and standard measurement, following cardinal directions to pin a heart on the grinch, as well as, conducting a scientific experiment to create Grinch Goo! In the classroom the students did word work with green noodles and grinch glue. The students incorporated their art class by creating a Who-ville village with their art teacher, Ms. Progar. Students Produce Goods for Bazaar

This year, as third graders at Seaford Elementary School learn about economic concepts, they are also in the business of teaching second graders about the concepts they need to learn in second grade. In the Holiday Bazaar project, the students are operating as small businesses within each classroom to produce holiday decorative goods which they will sell to second grade consumers. Students have recorded a resources song for second graders, produced their goods and will be creating advertisements, both video and poster, focusing on descriptive and persuasive writing that will be posted online and around the school. SCA Appreciates York County Firefighters

Student Council members from YHS, YMS, SES and YES worked together to create gift bags for firefighters working on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The students decorated the bags, wrote thank you cards and stuffed the bags full of goodies. Read more



The Sock Project

Members of the Fine Arts, Practical Arts and Physical Education Departments at Tabb High combined their efforts to collects socks for those in need over the holidays. Each department focused on their area of expertise. Signs were created, contests publicized, socks were collected from classrooms and additional donations brought in from the community during the Band and Choral Concerts resulting in the grand "Sock Sculpture" now on display in the THS Commons. The sculpture will be broken down and socks paired and presented to veterans and elderly in need. Read more
