Bethel Manor Students Celebrate Reading

Bethel Manor Elementary School students and families celebrated the love of reading at Barnes & Noble on Tuesday, March 26, 2013. The celebration included the showcase of original artwork, a performance by the fourth and fifth grade chorus, second graders acting out their favorite Mo Willems books, and Bethel Manor teachers reading their favorite books to families. Grafton Middle School is Determined!

Grafton Middle School’s I'm Determined Team had the opportunity to present at the Regional Conference at the College of William & Mary. The dynamic implementation team included staff members Ebony Griffin, Keisha Buckner, Chelsea Normandeau, Ashley Hurst, and two students, Ashley Bush and Alissa Major. The team engaged a room of more than 250 educators, students and parents who were interested in the programs implemented and modified at Grafton Middle that empowered students to "learn how to help themselves," the essence of the self-determination project. From student-led IEP meetings to the S.T.O.P conference model, staff are excited about where this program will take their school. Read more

William and Mary Basketball Stars Read to Waller Mill Students

Katie Buenaga, a student teacher from the College of William & Mary, recently invited college athletes to Waller Mill Elementary School for Reading Month. Terry Tarpey, Brett Goodlowe and Tim Rusthoven, members of the William and Mary basketball team, visited Mrs. O'Neal's second grade students to read the Stinky Cheese Man book. Read more



Third Graders at Magruder Travel Undersea with Dr. Steinberg

Third grade students at Magruder Elementary School had a very special and exciting visit from Dr. Deborah K. Steinberg, a Professor of Marine Science at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Dr. Steinberg presented the students with a hands-on account of the ocean and brought along several creatures for the students to view and touch. Dr. Steinberg discussed adaptations of many ocean animals and explained to students the reason for each adaptation. The students were also interested to learn about the zones of the ocean and the various animals that live in each zone. Dr. Steinberg concluded her lesson by helping the students to become angler fish. Students were provided head bands that featured a glow in the dark lure. Angela Maiers Encourages Students to Find Their Genius

“You are a genius and the world needs your contributions!” That’s the message Angela Maiers delivered to students at Waller Mill Elementary School on Monday, March 25, 2013. Maiers, a former educator, served as an expert in residence while working with students and staff at several schools March 25-27, 2013. She worked with staff and students on developing lesson plans and activities that engage students in meaningful learning experiences that have an impact on their community. Read more

YCSD Programs Featured in State Directory

The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) has released its 17th annual VSBA Showcases for Success directory, highlighting successful K-12 programs in Virginia’s public schools. The York County School Division is one of 52 school divisions from across the Commonwealth that has programs featured in the directory highlighting programs that emphasize the VSBA’s mission of “Leadership, Advocacy, and Support.” YCSD programs featured in the Showcase include Technology Tuesday, monthly online and interactive professional development sessions to support teachers in the area of technology integration, and the Collaborative Approach to Teacher Evaluation, a multi-year committee approach to creating the division’s new teacher evaluation system. WMES Students Raise $1500 with Jump Rope for Heart
