YCSD Students Supporting Tornado VictimsPosted on: Friday, May 24, 2013Mt. Vernon Elementary School students have begun a fundraising campaign to help the children affected by the EF5 tornado that hit Moore, Oklahoma this week. Third grade students set up posters and collection cans at their school. They took their efforts a step further and made cans and posters for each school in the division to encourage other students to support the fundraising efforts. The fundraiser will continue through June 6, 2013. All monies raised will be donated to the Red Cross. Read more |

YCSD Teacher HonoredPosted on: Friday, May 17, 2013Mrs. Niccole Reinhart of Queens Lake Middle School was recently awarded the MyLunchMoney Awesome Teacher of the Year Award! MyLunchMoney asked students and parents to submit a 150 word nomination sharing why their teacher is awesome! Parents and students submitted more than 50 nominations for Mrs. Reinhard, earning her the recognition. As the award winner, Mrs. Reinhart received a $300 prize and Queens Lake Middle School will receive a donation of $500. Read more |
Kindergarten Recycling ProjectsPosted on: Friday, May 17, 2013Students in Mrs. Val Stitt's kindergarten class at Grafton Bethel Elementary School worked with their parents to make an object by reusing and recycling items from their homes. The students had to present their projects and write about them in their journals. Read more |
GMS Thanks Boston Marathon Heroes!Posted on: Friday, May 17, 2013Grafton Middle School students made letters and art for heroes in Boston to thank them for their commitment during the Boston Marathon bombing. Mrs. Layne's Sculpture & Crafts classes created illustrations and handwritten letters with a hero theme. Mrs. Knight's Keyboarding Basics classes made typographical art by filling a shape with descriptive "hero" words using the program Tagxedo. The letters were then sent to the Boston emergency workers including the police and fire departments. Read more |
Tabb Middle Competes in State TSA CompetitionPosted on: Friday, May 17, 2013Tabb Middle School's Technology Student Association (TSA) club competed in both leadership and technical events at the state finals held in Richmond in May. More than one thousand middle and high school students from throughout the state competed in various technology events. Congratulations to Erin Cox who placed 5th in Multimedia Production, Hunter Hinote who placed 5th in Dragster Design, and the team of Jenny Gu, Adam Corey and Didun Ayodeji who placed 9th in the Lego Mindstorm competition. Also competing and doing an excellent job were Mercedez Stokes, Jack Laughlin, Tyler Twiggs, Miles Church and Sean Gazarik who competed in other events. Read more |

YMS Pennies for PatientsPosted on: Friday, May 17, 2013Yorktown Middle School (YMS) has once again exceeded the school’s fundraising goal to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The school’s Student Council set a goal of raising $1,500 this year, but the final tally was $1,771! Coupled with the $2,100 (well over the $1,000 goal) raised in 2012, the school’s two-year fundraising now totals $3,871. The successful campaign was spurred on by classes competing to win the “Pasta for Pennies” Olive Garden lunch in which the class raising the most money would receive a catered lunch of salad, bread sticks and pasta, compliments of Olive Garden. YCSD Celebrated for Transforming LearningPosted on: Friday, May 17, 2013Students’ use of technology through the Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program in York County School Division (YCSD) was recently featured in a Digital Promise blog. Created by Congress and led by prominent educators and leaders in technology, Digital Promise is a new national center, with its goal being to advance technologies that can transform teaching and learning. YCSD was among the six charter members of the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools, which has grown to include 32 school divisions nationwide. Read more |
