Simulated Characters in The Cay

Students in Mary Christensen's fifth grade class at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) have been reading The Cay. In the story, Timothy, an elderly black West Indian sailor, and Stew Cat drift on a raft to a small, deserted island. Timothy teaches Phillip, who was blinded by a blow to his head, how to survive on the cay. The students simulated the scene in The Cay where Timothy teaches Phillip how to create a mat. One student is blindfolded and the other gives the directions. Students experienced the difficulties and successes of following another's guidance as they created their mats.
