Middle Years’ Programme Students Link Science with Algebra, Language and Visual Art

Posted On: 11/12/2009

The concepts of Algebra come alive for students in Robin Brockmiller's Middle Years Programme (MYP) Algebra I class at Yorktown Middle School. Students learned about stress points as they worked to solve the real-world situation of how to rescue a child stranded on an ice pond. Students developed "Cell as a City" projects, in which they were challenged with the task to create a city or other organization that contains the same functions as the organelles in a cell. They developed visual comparisons of the Scientific Method and the MYP Design Cycle in their MYP 7th grade science class with Lesley White. Through this project, students observed the similarities between the two and the frequency with which we utilize processes to solve problems.
