Oyster Restoration Club Field TripPosted On: 6/10/2011 |
The Oyster Restoration Club of Grafton Middle School (GMS) took a field trip to the oyster reef located in Felgates Creek on the Colonial Parkway May 26. Gwenn Pearson with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation had the students do several water activities. The students tested the creek water for ph and alkalinity. In addition the students planted approximately 6000 juvenile oysters on the established oyster shell reef at the mouth of Felgates Creek. The students learned how to use a seine net to capture different species for identification. Grass shrimp, silver side minnows and small blue crabs were caught in the nets. All species were released. |
