Ethan Jones Wins YMS Geography BeePosted On: 12/9/2010 |
Ethan Jones, an 8th grade student at Yorktown Middle School (YMS), won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on December 1st and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. Second place went to 6th grader Kevin Babu and third place was secured by 8th grader South Patterson. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 23rd annual National Geographic Bee which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society--one of the world's largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations founded in 1888 to "increase and diffuse geographic knowledge.” School-level winners will now take a written test to advance to the state bee. Up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Bee on April 1st. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate in the National Geographic Bee national championship on May 24th and 25th. |
