Resources for Families & Staff

The York County School Division recognizes the significance of the developing conflict in the Middle East and several unfolding high profile investigations, including one at Old Dominion University where many YCSD graduates attend. We know our students, staff, and families may be experiencing a range of emotions — concern, uncertainty, or heightened stress.

While these situations continue to develop, we remain committed to providing safe, secure and caring environments that support the whole child. Resources are available for those who may need someone to talk with or are feeling the emotional impact of recent events.

Available Support Resources

School Counselors and Student Support Staff
Our school-based counselors and social workers are here to listen, provide guidance, and connect students with additional supports as needed.

Care Solace
YCSD partners with Care Solace to help families and staff quickly and confidentially find mental health providers and counseling services that fit their needs. Care Solace is available 24/7, year-round.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
For our employees, the EAP offers confidential counseling, referrals, and support services for a wide range of personal and emotional needs.

Additionally, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) provides the following information for families and educators to talk with children about violence:

Additional reminders from NASP include:

• Reassure children that they are safe
• Make time to talk
• Keep your explanations developmentally appropriate
• Review safety procedures
• Observe children’s emotional state
• Limit television (and social media) viewing of these events
• Maintain a normal routine
