FY25 Annual Budget UpdateThe School Board received an update on the Proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Budget during the March Work Session. Chief Financial Officer Bill Bowen reviewed a summary of General Assembly actions as they relate to Governor Youngkin’s proposed K-12 funding. Legislators approved a budget which includes a 3% raise for teachers and support positions as well as an increase in education funding. The state budget is now back in the governor’s office facing possible amendments, while the school board is scheduled to adopt a proposed budget at the March 25 meeting to be submitted to the Board of Supervisors for approval. Elementary Attendance Zone ReviewDr. Jim Carroll, chief operations officer, shared a summary of the community input on options to address elementary enrollment levels received through email, phone calls, and a public hearing. In total, 11 individuals/organizations provided feedback, many requesting their neighborhoods not be rezoned. Board members engaged in discussion on the topic which will come before the board for a vote at the next meeting. 2024-25 Student Calendar ApprovedThe official student calendar for the 2024-25 school year was approved in February and is now available on the division website. The calendar includes 180 instructional days to meet state requirements and includes a two-week winter break. Middle School ScheduleIn March 2023, the division began reviewing the current middle school schedule to develop a recommendation for a schedule which best serves the needs of all students. A committee, comprised of teachers, parents, counselors, school administrators, and school board office staff, met from September 2023 through February 2024 to analyze the benefits and challenges of the current middle school schedule, research schedule options, and review focus group and survey data. Using the TregoEd protocols, the committee also evaluated simulations of proposed schedule options. At the February middle school schedule meeting, the committee recommended a schedule which would maintain the current 4-block, A-B day schedule but with addition of daily English instruction in grades 7 and 8, with the exception of Advanced English. The committee recommended additional research on the potential impacts of their recommendation before any formal changes are adopted. Division staff will continue that research before finalizing a plan for adoption and implementation in the 2025-26 school year. Community AnnouncementsThe York County School Division offers local businesses and organizations the opportunity to share information with students and parents regarding educational/enrichment activities, events and opportunities, which are either available to YCSD students or support division programs. These flyers are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the York County School Division or the schools, but are made available as a community service for our families. Community announcements can also be found on the division website and each school's website. |
