The Yorktown Middle School Classics Club sponsored a "Hats Off to Avalon" Day. Students paid $1.00 to purchase a sticker which allowed the student to wear the hat of their choice to school for the day. The Club raised $467 to donate to Avalon - A Center for Women and Children. The Classics Club, sponsored by Lynn Rickerson and Mary Gatens, is open to all sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls and promotes self-esteem to empower girls to avoid drugs, teen pregnancies and abusive relationships. The club members are also encouraged to support each other academically through peer tutoring. |
