 Yorktown Elementary School (YES) students and staff recently participated in schoolwide STEM. Activities that align with grade level SOLs were selected to increase student understanding of the engineering design process, reinforce content, and promote collaboration. Kindergarteners constructed geometric shapes with candy corn and tooth picks. First graders created webs to see how high they could get Spiderman to bounce from the web when dropped from a specified height. Second graders created different shaped sails and tested which sail made model cars travel the farthest. Third graders created cantilever structures. Fourth graders made dragon racers and measured to see which vehicle went the furthest distance. Fifth graders designed lung capacity devices to test their lung capacity and determine if girls or boys have greater lung capacity. The school also participated in Mad Scientist Spirit Day with students and staff members dressing like scientists.
