Dark Side of the Internet Parent Seminars

Posted On: 1/9/2015

Internet use has grown exponentially around the world, and teenagers are the primary producers and users of web and social media content. They share their ideas, thoughts and pictures with others online. The unfortunate reality, however, is that the Internet has also created an environment in which private information can, knowingly or unknowingly, end up in the wrong hands.

The York County PTA and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office are hosting Digital Safety parent seminars at four York County schools next month. These seminars are designed to help parents navigate the dilemmas presented by the digital world our kids inhabit. Each seminar will provide an overview of current digital threats to children (cyberbullying, online predators, oversharing, sexting, and sextortion) along with digital safety information.

Guest speakers and expert panelists include:

  • Rex Gray – NCIS Digital Forensic Examiner
  • Paula Barrows – FBI Special Agent
  • Ben Hahn – York-Poquoson Commonwealth’s Attorney
  • York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office Deputies
  • York County School Division Technology Staff

Please join us at one of the following locations to learn and prepare to tackle issues that are facing our students and their parents.

  • Grafton High School:            Tuesday, February 3 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Bruton High School:             Tuesday, February 17 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Yorktown Middle School:    Tuesday, February 24 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Tabb Middle School:            Thursday, February 26 at 6:30 p.m.

Child care will be provided by the PTSA at each location.
