York High Opens Student-Run Credit Union

Posted On: 9/12/2014

York High School (YHS) held the official ribbon-cutting for a new student-run credit union during Back-to-School night. The credit union is the result of a partnership between BayPort Credit Union and YHS and is designed to help familiarize teens with the banking system and how to properly manage money.

It also aids student tellers in learning workplace readiness skills including leadership and professionalism. Selected student tellers are trained by credit union staff to operate the branch during lunch periods while assisting their classmates and staff in making account deposits and withdrawals.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, York County School Board Chairman Mark Medford shared, “the program not only aligns with state mandated for financial literacy instruction, it also brings life to the course, so that students can put into practice what they’re learning.”

The in-school branch provides convenient on-campus account access to all students and staff. When students and staff open accounts at the YHS location, they become BayPort members and can use services at other branches as well. Likewise, students and staff who are existing members can access their accounts at the YHS branch.
