Notice to Residents

The York County School Division will be implementing another round of efforts to disperse a vulture roost from the York High School property. The division received approval from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to use pyrotechnics to remove the roost due to the damage caused to YCSD buildings. In addition the vultures have been deemed a potential health concern by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service due to the excessive droppings on the property.

YCSD will attempt to disperse the vulture roost using pyrotechnics similar to fireworks. Pyrotechnics are considered a safe and effective method for dispersing vulture roosts by creating short bursts of noise that are very loud to the birds (approximately 20 decibels).

The pyrotechnic efforts will occur around dusk for a period of five to ten days, beginning on September 16, 2013. Residents near York High School may notice a series of loud noises when the pyrotechnics are in use. Additional mitigation efforts may be required should the vultures return to the roost at a later date.
