YHS Marching Band Having a Great YearPosted on: Friday, November 01, 2013The York High School (YHS) Marching Band is hoping to continue its winning ways in Annapolis this weekend. Under the direction of Mr. Richard Purvis, the band won first place in the Division Four Marching Band category at the Powhatan Fall Classic Competition held October 26, 2013. The Falcons excelled in many categories winning a superior rating overall, first place in music, marching, visual performance and percussion and second place in general effects. We wish them the best of luck at the regional competition in Annapolis. Read more |
GHS Battle of the BrainsPosted on: Friday, October 25, 2013Nine members of the Grafton High School (GHS) Scholastic Bowl Team traveled to Richmond recently to test their knowledge against students from Fort Defiance High School in the Battle of the Brains, an academic quiz show. The teams were well matched and made for some exciting moments. The lead changed back and forth between the two teams, but in the end we lost by one question! Read more |
Pumpkins for a CausePosted on: Friday, October 25, 2013Coventry Elementary School (CES) hosted a pumpkin auction in October to raise money for the school's Relay for Life team, Cougars for a Cause. Parents donated craft pumpkins for each classroom to decorate and the students’ creativity was amazing. Students and teachers decorated the pumpkins to represent different career choices. The pumpkin auction was a huge success raising more than $500 for the fight against cancer! Read more |
Monarch MadnessPosted on: Friday, October 25, 2013Monarch habitats at all ten York County School Division elementary schools have become a beautiful breeding ground for the monarch butterfly. More than 300 Monarch caterpillars have been collected and observed in dozens of elementary classrooms throughout the division. Students have observed the Monarchs develop through their various life cycle stages. Once a Monarch reaches the butterfly stage, it is tagged and released. These butterflies will migrate to Mexico where they will hibernate before another long journey to the United States in the spring. Internet Safety PresentationPosted on: Friday, October 25, 2013More than 70 people attended an Internet Safety Forum at York High School (YHS) this week. Special Agent Paula Barrows, a member of the FBI’s Innocent Images Task Force, led the presentation for parents and students. The task force was created in the wake of a 1993 case in Maryland in which a 12-year-old boy went missing after developing an online relationship with an adult. Barrows demonstrated how quickly a child predator can learn private details about children, such as what school they attend and where they live, from what seem to be innocent posts in chat rooms or social media sites. Her advice to parents is to never allow teenagers or children to go online without adult supervision. Read more |
York High School Marching Band CompetesPosted on: Monday, October 14, 2013The York High School Marching Band competed in the Annual Warhill Classic Band Competition. The York High School Marching Band won first place in the following captions: Drum Major, Percussion, Music, Marching and General Effect. The York Marching Band was recognized as the top overall marching band at the competition, earning first place A Band Division, as well as first place overall for the Blue Division. Read more |
Federal Impact Aid Survey CardsPosted on: Friday, October 11, 2013Federal Impact Aid survey cards will be sent home with students the week of October 14th. Impact Aid is a federal program that provides assistance to local school districts with military-dependent students. By filling out and returning these surveys, parents help our schools claim and benefit from the district's authorized share of federal support. Each signed and completed survey is critical to ensuring that YCSD continues to receive federal Impact Aid funding which supports, in part, teacher salaries, textbooks and other instructional materials. Forms should be returned to the school the day after the forms are sent home. Read more |
