TMS Students Hold Pet Supply Donation Drive

Sixth graders at Tabb Middle School (TMS) have been inspired by reading Peg Kehret's novel, Ghost Dog Secrets. The novel brings to light the need to make a difference in life. Students have learned that they are the "somebody" in the phrase "Somebody ought to do something." Students held a Pet Supply Donation Drive for two weeks. Newspapers, towels, cat and dog food, and toys were collected in English classes. All items will be delivered to the Peninsula SPCA. Read more



SES Relay for Life Team

The Seaford Elementary School Relay for Life team raised more than $400 for Cancer Research at Pizza and Pumpkins night, hosted by the PTA. Each class submitted a wreath to auction off. Read more



Essay Competition Open to High School Students

The Virginia State Bar’s annual Law In Society Essay Competition for Virginia high school students is now accepting entries. This year’s contest engages students in the evolving social media conversation with the topic, “Social Media – Is Anything Private?” Entry deadline is February 13, 2014 with a top prize of $2,300. Students Working to Fight Hunger

School of the Arts students (SOA) learned about the issue of hunger, as well as about different types of clay pots while participating in the Empty Bowls project this year. Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger. Participants create ceramic bowls and then serve a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a small donation, guests choose one of the ceramic bowls to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. Read more



Queens Lake Middle School Practicing for the First Annual Fall Concert

The Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) band and chorus presented their first annual Fall Concert on October 29, 2013. This event showcased what the students have been learning so far this year. They performed a variety of selections including The Addams Family, Little Shop of Horrors, Child of Peace, Go Tell Aunt Rhodie and more. Read more

K-9 Search and Rescue Visits Tabb Middle

Lt. Vernon Max Frayser, of the Hanover Fire-EMS Technical Rescue Team, and his K-9 partner, Liberty, recently visited Mr. William Howard's Forensic Science and Criminal Justice classes at Tabb Middle School (TMS). Liberty, a nine-year-old Black Lab mix, is an Air Scent Urban Search and Rescue Canine. She is specially trained to locate a live victim that cannot be seen or is concealed by debris. Lt. Frayser and Liberty respond to special emergencies such as building collapses, industrial accidents, water rescue calls, trench collapses, etc. Mr. Howard's students received a demonstration of some of Liberty's many skills. QLMS Award-Winning Art Students

Queens Lake Middle School (QLMS) art students won first place for Youth Art - Middle School category - at An Occasion for the Arts (AOFTA) in Williamsburg this October. Their winning display, “Cellular,” was a group creation of abstract organic “Dots” that the students began making in September to celebrate “International Dot Day.” This day is a global effort inspired by Peter Reynold's children's book, The Dot, which emphasizes creativity and taking chances. YHS Marching Band Having a Great Year

The York High School (YHS) Marching Band is hoping to continue its winning ways in Annapolis this weekend. Under the direction of Mr. Richard Purvis, the band won first place in the Division Four Marching Band category at the Powhatan Fall Classic Competition held October 26, 2013. The Falcons excelled in many categories winning a superior rating overall, first place in music, marching, visual performance and percussion and second place in general effects. We wish them the best of luck at the regional competition in Annapolis. Read more
