State Board of Education Recognizes YCSD

The Virginia Board of Education has announced the 2022-23 Exemplar Performance Awards recognizing schools or school divisions that exceed board-established requirements or show continuous improvement on academic and school quality indicators and (ii) schools, school divisions, and school boards that implement effective, innovative practices. The awards are based on performance and practice during the 2021-22 school year. Read more

VDOE K-12 Learning Acceleration Grants

Virginia families can now apply for funds from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to help support the costs of tutoring and other similar services. K-12 Learning Acceleration grants of $1,500 are available to families of any public, private, parochial or home-school student in grades K-12 residing in Virginia, while qualifying families are eligible for $3,000. NHREC BUILD Hampton Roads Career Selection Day

More than 20 YCSD high school seniors were recognized as future ready graduates during the sixth annual New Horizons Regional Education Centers’ (NHREC) BUILD Hampton Roads Career Selection Day ceremony this week. The event, modeled after the NCAA’s National Signing Day for athletes committing to play sports in college, celebrates students entering the automotive, construction, advanced manufacturing and information/cybersecurity workforce directly after high school. Through their specialized career and technical training at NHREC, these graduating seniors have the opportunity to gain full-time employment with Hampton Roads employers in high demand and high wage-earning entry-level positions earning on average between $18 to $28 per hour plus full employer benefits. This year, 110 students from the six school divisions in the greater peninsula area signed on with 23 regional employers! Congratulations to all the students on their next steps! Read more



VDOE Superintendent of Public Instruction Visits YCSD School

Dr. Lisa Coons, VDOE Superintendent of Public Instruction, visited classrooms at Magruder Elementary School this morning to kick of Teacher Appreciation Week. She had the opportunity to observe – and participate - as students took part in small group instruction, writing lessons, and STEM instruction in the school’s Makerspace. Tabb Elementary Kids Heart Challenge

Tabb Elementary School has been participating in a nationwide fundraiser for the American Heart Association since the year 2003. Tabb's participation in Kids Heart Challenge, formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart, was initiated by Bette Seymore, Physical Education teacher who retired from TES in 2012. Her tradition has been carried on by the current Physical Education Teacher, Ginny Sinclair. The 2022-23 school year marks Tabb Elementary's 21st year participating in the fundraiser, which focuses on teaching students about how to keep their healthy hearts healthy, and how they can help others whose hearts aren't as healthy as theirs. This was a record-breaking year for Tabb Elementary School. Students raised $28,303.49 and in doing so, ranked 3rd in the state of Virginia for the most money donated through the Kids Heart Challenge. This brings the school's 21 year total to over $290,000. YCSD Teacher Named Virginia Region II Teacher of the Year

The York County School Division (YCSD) Teacher of the Year Craig Reynolds has been named the Virginia Region II Teacher of the Year. YCSD leaders were joined by VDOE staff in making the surprise announcement during a school assembly this afternoon. Reynolds, a fifth grade teacher at Magruder Elementary School, was selected from among the Teachers of the Year from 16 school divisions in the Hampton Roads area which comprise Region II. He joins seven other regional teachers of the year as finalists for the Virginia Teacher of the Year. The selection and announcement of the state honor is expected in May. The winner will go on to represent Virginia in the Council of Chief State School Officer’s National Teacher of the Year Program. There have been three previous national teachers of the year to hail from the Commonwealth. Read more

YCSD Students Advance to PTA National Competition

Two York County School Division students earned first place honors at the state level of this year’s PTA Reflections program. The PTA Reflections contest is a national initiative founded in 1969 that encourages students to express themselves through the arts and be rewarded for their effort. The theme of this year's contest was "Show Your Voice!" Read more



Tabb High DECA Advances to International Competition

Members of the Tabb High School DECA joined 3,500 high school business, finance, hospitality and marketing students at the annual association career development conference held in early March at Virginia Beach where they participated in their career pathway competitive event. Read more
