YCSD 2014-15 Calendar Adjustments

The York County School Division has made adjustments to the 2014-15 school calendar to address the number of school closures and delays caused by inclement weather and road conditions. The plan, based on instructional time lost as of March 3, was developed with the priorities of maximizing instructional time as well as protecting Spring Break and Memorial Day. Read more



School Board Community Forums

The York County School Board has announced the schedule for a series of community forums. The events provide an opportunity for York County residents, parents, and other interested stakeholders to meet with and hear from school board members and the division’s new superintendent, Dr. Victor Shandor. Since joining the division in November, Dr. Shandor has held nearly 40 forums with staff members to gain feedback and respond to questions and hopes to gain additional perspectives from the community at these upcoming events. YCSD Calendar Adjustment Information

The York County School Division has made an adjustment to the school calendar due to the school closings this week. Next Friday, February 27 will now be a full school day for all students. There will be no early dismissal on Friday, February 27. Recognizing that the division will need to make up additional time due to the unscheduled closings this week, we are still assessing the available options. We do want our staff, students and parents to know that we are committed to protecting Spring Break and Memorial Day. Additional details regarding adjustments to the 2014-15 school calendar will be discussed at the School Board meeting Monday night. Read more



Division Schools Celebrate 100 Days

Across the York County School Division, students and teachers alike were found celebrating the 100-day mark in a variety of ways. Mrs. Wicher's class and first graders at Seaford Elementary dressed up as 100-year-old citizens, as did Yorktown Elementary secretary, Joseph Barragan. Mt. Vernon Elementary students made t-shirts with 100 designs on them, and other schools and classes instructed their students to bring in 100 items. Some students brought Solo cups, while others contributed M&Ms and other edible treats. Read more



YCSD Student Art Contest Winners

The York County School Division (YCSD) honored the Winter 2015 Student Art Contest winners during a reception in February. The contest is open to all YCSD students, with winners being selected at the elementary and secondary levels. Kali Busquets, a student at Seaford Elementary School, was awarded the elementary prize for her artwork, while York High School student Gabby Gurdin earned the secondary prize. Both pieces of artwork join a permanent display of student artwork at the School Board Office. Read more



Pea Island Lifesaving Station Brought to Life for Yorktown Middle Students

Yorktown Middle School students recently attended a special TRACEN Yorktown Leadership Diversity Advisory Council African American History Month event. Rear Admiral Stephen W. Rochon (U.S. Coast Guard, retired) gave an inspirational presentation about the all-black crew of the Pea Island Lifesaving Station and their daring rescue in 1896 near the Outer Banks of North Carolina. BMES Student Council Association Raises Money for School Events

The Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) SCA sponsored "Crazy Dress" for all staff and students in exchange for a dollar to participate. All donations collected were presented as checks to Principal Michael Lombardo and fifth grade teacher, Jennie MacBlane. The money raised will support student and PTA activities planned for this spring. Read more



Seaford Elementary and York High Robotics Clubs Meet

The York High School (YHS) award-winning robotics team recently visited Seaford Elementary School (SES) to share ideas with the younger students. The YHS team talked about their robot, gave a demonstration on how it works, and allowed the SES team to man the controls for a little while. Read more



Dare Elementary and Bethel Manor Elementary Skype with Local Author

June Jones and Susan Willard, Educational Technology Facilitators (ETF) from Dare Elementary and Bethel Manor Elementary schools co-developed a Skype session that brought nine fourth and fifth grade classes together for a blended learning activity. Classes from both schools met Roberta Wiatt, a local author of children's books from Gloucester, via Skype on January 30. The ETFs provided copies of two of her books in advance so that students and teachers could prepare for the Skype session by reading the books and generating questions for the author. Read more



Grafton Middle School Bandana Brigade

The Bandana Brigade launched Grafton Middle School's (GMS) newest Positive Behavior Support Initiative, "Under Construction, Building Our Clipper Community" at the school's pep rally on Friday, January 30. Dressed as construction workers and dancing the Ninja Rap, the Bandana Brigade took the school by storm with their dance moves! Can you dig it? Read more
