YHS Teacher Finalist for Prestigious AwardPosted on: Friday, March 04, 2016A York High School (YHS) teacher is being considered as a finalist for a Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award. Amy Insley, theater teacher at YHS, was nominated by her former student Meaghan Witten. The award, to be announced on March 22, 2016, recognizes teachers who had significant impact on an individual student. The teachers selected will receive a certificate, a check for $10,000, and their photo will be posted on the Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher website along with their nominator's photo and a story about the impact the teacher had on the nominator's life. School Board Appreciation MonthPosted on: Friday, February 26, 2016Throughout the month of February, students and staff across the York County School Division have been showing York County School Board members how much they appreciate their service. The Virginia School Board Association designates each February as School Board Appreciation Month. Students and staff wrote cards and letters to all the members and shared “thank yous” at the February School Board meeting. Some, like Seaford Elementary School students, invited Board members to join them for a school lunch. Read more |
MES Students Embraced by Spring Arbor ResidentsPosted on: Friday, February 26, 2016Students at Magruder Elementary School are building what they hope is a long-lasting relationship with residents of the Spring Arbor Assisted Living facility. It all started when Sandi Murawski’s kindergarten class took a gingerbread house to Spring Arbor Assisted Living in December and visited with the residents. The residents were so tickled that they requested a chance to visit the class this month. On February 19, several residents joined Murawski’s class for a shared reading time and ice cream social with students. They were also invited to the students’ patriotic program in March. Read more |
Ginjer Clarke Author VisitPosted on: Friday, February 26, 2016Dare Elementary School students were excited to host famous non-fiction writer Ginjer Clarke and learn about the writing process. Clarke writes fun, fact-filled nonfiction science readers about wild, wonderful animals—especially extreme or unusual animals—which makes learning about nature entertaining and engaging. Students also had a chance to have their own books autographed by Clarke. Read more |
Seaford Elementary Second Grade Taxation DayPosted on: Friday, February 26, 2016Students in Trisha Mohrhusen's second grade class are studying famous Americans. They started their unit learning why settlers wanted to break away from England. To demonstrate why the colonists felt so strongly about the taxes being imposed on them, students paid taxes to the “queen of England.” Read more |
GHS Supports Natasha HousePosted on: Friday, February 26, 2016Jennifer Zwirschitz's Spanish Conversation and Culture class at Grafton High School (GHS) recently studied and discussed human rights issue. After spending some time focusing on homelessness, the students decided to try to make a difference in the community. They reached out to The Natasha House, a local transitional home for homeless women and children located in York County, to translate their brochure into Spanish to reach more women in need. They were then granted a presentation and tour of the facility where they presented their work to the staff and learned more about the services available to the homeless in our area. Read more |
Fuel Up for Play 60Posted on: Friday, February 19, 2016The York County School Division and the division’s food service provider, Sodexo, was awarded a $27,384 Fuel Up for Play 60 grant. The Southeast United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA) presented the division with the check at the Shape Convention at the Williamsburg Lodge in February. The funds will be utilized to implement fresh fruit smoothies and parfait bars at the middle and high schools. In addition, bicycles were purchased that will be raffled at each school in an effort to emphasize the importance of physical exercise and healthy eating. Read more |
NFL Wide Receiver Motivates YHS StudentsPosted on: Friday, February 19, 2016Ben Edwards, a wide receiver for the New York Giants, spoke to an assembly of student athletes at York High School (YHS) recently. A 2010 YHS graduate, he encouraged the students to set priorities to help them reach future success and to focus on more thanathletics. “People aren’t going to remember what I accomplished(athletically). People are going to remember my character,” he told them. Edwards has continued to support the York Falcons since his graduation, serving as an assistant football coach this fall while recovering from a hamstring injury. During the studentassembly, he announced that he was donating four iPads, which the students will be able to win for demonstrating various character attributes, such as sportsmanship and commitment. 100th Day of School CelebrationsPosted on: Friday, February 19, 2016Students and teachers showed their enthusiasm for reaching the 100th day milestone of the school year by dressing up as centenarians on February 19. In addition to pretending to be 100 years old, students engaged in various lessons related to the number 100, such as bringing and counting 100 small items; wearing 100th day crowns; stringing necklaces with 100 rings; counting to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s; and doing jumping jacks to 100. Virginia's First Lady Tours YCSD SchoolsPosted on: Friday, February 19, 2016Dorothy McAuliffe, wife of Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, visited two York County School Division schools on February 19. She started the day touring Tabb Elementary School with Superintendent Victor Shandor and members of the York County School Board to learn more about the school’s Breakfast in the Classroom program, which the school first implemented in 2006. As first lady of the Commonwealth, McAuliffe has dedicated her efforts to eliminating childhood hunger in partnership with the No Child Hungry Virginia campaign. Read more |
