100th Day of School CelebrationsPosted on: Friday, February 19, 2016Students and teachers showed their enthusiasm for reaching the 100th day milestone of the school year by dressing up as centenarians on February 19. In addition to pretending to be 100 years old, students engaged in various lessons related to the number 100, such as bringing and counting 100 small items; wearing 100th day crowns; stringing necklaces with 100 rings; counting to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s; and doing jumping jacks to 100. Virginia's First Lady Tours YCSD SchoolsPosted on: Friday, February 19, 2016Dorothy McAuliffe, wife of Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, visited two York County School Division schools on February 19. She started the day touring Tabb Elementary School with Superintendent Victor Shandor and members of the York County School Board to learn more about the school’s Breakfast in the Classroom program, which the school first implemented in 2006. As first lady of the Commonwealth, McAuliffe has dedicated her efforts to eliminating childhood hunger in partnership with the No Child Hungry Virginia campaign. Read more |
York County School Division Early Release - February 12Posted on: Thursday, February 11, 2016The division will be implementing early dismissals for all schools tomorrow, Friday, February 12, due to the potential for hazardous road conditions during regular dismissal hours. Schools will dismiss as follows: All high schools, with the exception of York River Academy, will dismiss at 11:20 a.m. All middle schools and York River Academy will dismiss at noon and all elementary schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. In addition, all preschool classes and all after-school and evening activities are canceled. Great Kindness ChallengePosted on: Friday, February 05, 2016York County School Division elementary schools are participating in the Great Kindness Challenge. The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bully prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement by encouraging student to perform as many acts of kindness as possible in one week. Magruder Elementary School students and staff began with a school-wide rainbow photo op in which each grade level wore a different color and the staff members were clouds. Read more |
Yorktown Woman’s Club Art Contest WinnersPosted on: Friday, February 05, 2016Dozens of York County School Division students have been recognized by the Yorktown Woman’s Club in the club’s annual art contest. York High Teacher Named Top TeacherPosted on: Friday, February 05, 2016Amy Insley, theater teacher at York High School, has been named the Top Teacher Overall by Coastal Virginia Magazine. This is the third straight year Insley has been featured in the magazine. Teachers were nominated by students, peers and/or parents last summer with online voting taking place in November and December. The ten individuals receiving the greatest number of votes are profiled in the February/March Education issue. With 3,570 votes, Insley received the most votes. Read more |
Yorktown Elementary Hosts Annual Chess TournamentPosted on: Friday, January 29, 2016Yorktown Elementary School (YES) students participated in the Annual Chess Tournament one Saturday in January. Twelve members of the Chess Enrichment Club, from grades 3-5, competed against their peers in a game that helps students build critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Tom Philipoom, club sponsor, ensured that the guidelines and procedures used during competitive chess tournaments were followed by students. The club is one of the highest sought-after school activities for YES students. Read more |
BMES Tie and Tiara Tuesdays ProgramPosted on: Friday, January 29, 2016On Tuesdays, Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) students in grades 3-5 are encouraged to dress to impress with ties and other related dress clothes. The Tie and Tiara program focuses on looking your best and feeling your best so that you can DO your best in school. Second Graders Skype with WTKR MeteorologistPosted on: Friday, January 29, 2016On Thursday, November 21, 60 second grade students at Yorktown Elementary School learned about weather forecasting during a Skype session with WTKR meteorologist, Myles Henderson. Mr. Henderson took time to answer students' questions about weather in general and, specifically, about the impending snow storm. The real world learning experience enhanced their weather unit and supported the S.T.E.M. focus of Yorktown Elementary in a blended learning platform. Several students spent the remainder of the day talking about becoming meteorologists. Read more |
Magruder Teacher's Pledge Inspires Fundraising DrivePosted on: Friday, January 29, 2016The morning announcements at Magruder Elementary School (MES) featured a unique segment on January 28, as a teacher had her head shaved. MES staff, students and parents have been raising money to support a kindergarten student undergoing treatment for leukemia. They held a Hats on for Gracie day in which students donated at least one dollar to wear a hat to school. Sandra Murawski, a kindergarten teacher, promised to have her head shaved if at least $500 was raised. Not only did the school meet her challenge, they raised more than $3,000! Read more |
