MVES KidWind Regional Competition

Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) students recently participated in the Regional KidWind Challenge in Virginia Beach. The girls’ team placed second overall in addition to winning The Judges’ Award and a Teamwork Award. They have been invited to participate in the National KidWind Challenge being held in New Orleans in May. The KidWind Challenge is the ultimate wind energy learning experience for students. Students around the country are able to explore wind energy through the hands-on, investigative, and exciting challenges. The goal of the KidWind Challenge is to help students discover the promise and limitations of wind energy technology, design, build, and test a functional creative wind turbine, and compete with their peers in a supportive environment. YCSD School Level Teachers of the Year

Congratulations to the 19 York County School Division (YCSD) teachers who were selected by their peers as their school’s Teacher of the Year. The York County Teacher of the Year program recognizes one teacher at each division school. A panel of teachers and administrators will select a division level Teacher of the Year from among these honorees later this year. The division teacher of the year represents YCSD in the state's Teacher of the Year competition. Read more



TMS Battle of the Books Competition Team

On March 9, students from Tabb Middle School battled against two other teams in the middle school Battle of the Books County Competition at the Tabb Library. Participants read twelve books from September to February and competed in a school battle in February. The winners of that battle became members of the competition team. To prepare for county competition, students wrote questions from each of the texts and quizzed one another. Read more



YCSD Finance Awards

The Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International has awarded York County School Division its Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting award for having met or exceeded the program’s high standards for financial reporting and accountability. The district was recognized for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ending 2015 Read more



MVES SCA Student Service Project

The Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) Student Council participated in the Pennies for Patients Program designed to help fund research for childhood leukemia. The Mustang students and families raised $1,738.62 for the cause. Sya LaManque's fifth grade class raised the most money, over $200. The winning class will receive a delicious pasta snack from the Pennies for Patients Program. Read more



Mt. Vernon Battle of the Books County Battle

The Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) Battle of the Books team won the county battle on March 2. This win marks the school’s third year as county champions. The MVES team will now move on to represent York County in the regional battle at 10:30 a.m., March 19, at the Williamsburg Regional Library. Read more



Grafton Middle Readers Visit Coventry Elementary for Read Across America

Every year Coventry Elementary (CES) and Grafton Middle School (GMS) pair up to celebrate Read Across America by bringing GMS students to CES classrooms to read. The middle school students bring their favorite children’s book and read to kindergarten, first or second grade classes. They have discussions with the students about the book and encourage them to continue reading. Many of the GMS students are former CES students reading in their old classrooms. Read more



Tabb Middle Student Donation Drive

Sixth grade students at Tabb Middle School (TMS) read Ghost Dog Secrets by Peg Kehret as an introduction to their Action for Animal Awareness project. The novel centers around a boy who wants to rescue a dog that is being abused, while his class at school focuses on helping dogs rescued from a puppy mill. TMS students were inspired to hold their own donation drive to benefit the Peninsula SPCA. They collected many supplies to help shelter animals including food, toys, and towels. Read more



Engineering Day at NNS

A group of York High School students recently participated in the Engineering Career Day event hosted by Newport News Shipbuilding at the Apprentice School gym. The purpose of the Career Day is to support the annual National Engineers week. NASA Langley, Jefferson Labs, Newport News Shipbuilding Engineering and Peninsula Engineering Council (PEC) provided students with a half day of exploration in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related career fields. Project BeYOUtiful at Tabb Middle School

The Tabb Middle School Builder's Club has taken a new approach to help students replace destructive negative self-talk and with words of beauty and kindness. A wall of 4x4” canvases with phrases of common negative self-talk was displayed in the school. Over the course of a week, each student and staff member removed a canvas from the wall and wrote over the negative wording with a message of positivity, hope, or acceptance. Read more
