Grafton Complex Closed - Feb. 4 & 5Posted on: Monday, February 03, 2020Just before 4 pm today, school administrators initiated evacuation procedures due to reports of an electrical issue in the main electrical room. As emergency responders arrived, an active fire was discovered. The fire was contained to that electrical room though smoke did spread through parts of the building. Due to the nature of this incident, power to the building remains off and Dominion Energy is on site assessing the situation. We do not yet have an estimate for power restoration or a timeline for necessary repairs. Therefore, school is canceled for Grafton High School and Grafton Middle School tomorrow Tuesday, February 4 and Wednesday, February 5. Read more |
WMES First Grade Habitat ProjectPosted on: Wednesday, January 29, 2020Jamie Looby’s first grade class at Waller Mill learned all about animals during their Animal Unit in science. Students learned that animals need air, water, food, and shelter. Students classified animals based on being mammals, reptiles, birds or amphibians. They then learned more about where they live, how they move, body coverings, etc. To show what they have learned, students had the opportunity to put it all together and make a 3D model of an animal of their choice. My School is So Proud of Me!Posted on: Thursday, January 23, 2020Seaford Elementary School administrators and staff took a field trip to visit the homes of some special students last night as the school launched its new Signs of Excellence program. The surprise visit were to recognize students who stand out in terms of perseverance, respect, responsibility, caring, and citizenship. Each student received a certificate and a yard sign that reads "My School is so Proud of Me!" Principal Barbara Nagel shared that they to continue these home visits every few weeks - so be on the lookout for these signs throughout the York zone! Read more |
Principal for a Day ProgramPosted on: Monday, January 27, 2020The York County School Division will host its fourth annual Principal for a Day program on Tuesday, January 28. The program, which pairs local elected officials and community leaders with a principal, provides participants the opportunity to learn first-hand about the issues facing today’s educators and administrators. Activities will range from staff meetings, parent conferences, classroom observations, lunchroom and carpool duty, as well as the many unexpected events that occur every day. The day will conclude with a reception for all participants at the Freight Shed in Yorktown. Read more |
Bus Stop IncidentPosted on: Thursday, January 23, 2020As you know, safety is a top priority for the division. As such, we are letting you know that this morning, division staff received a report of potentially suspicious individuals in a dark-colored vehicle seen near a bus stop on Eagle Loop in the Langley housing community serving Bethel Manor Elementary, Tabb Middle, and Tabb High schools. This information has been reported to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office for further investigation. While information is very limited at this time, we wanted to take this opportunity to share some safety tips regarding school bus stops. Young children should be supervised whenever possible at the bus stop and while walking to and from the stop. Students should walk in groups or use a buddy system whenever possible. And remember, if you see a suspicious vehicle in your neighborhood - particularly during the pick-up and drop-off bus stop times, please report this information to the Sheriff’s Office and the school. Patriot's Pen Essay WinnersPosted on: Thursday, December 05, 2019Each year more than 125,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest nationwide. This year, three Tabb Middle students won all three awards at our local level. Congratulations to first place winner, Jacob Grieme; second place winner, Jatin Tiwari; and third place winner, Sinaya Hairston. The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting an essay expressing their views based on a patriotic theme. Each entry was carefully evaluated by a team of VFW Post 824 members and was considered for criteria such as theme knowledge, theme development, and clarity of ideas. Read more |
Calendar Development UpdatePosted on: Wednesday, November 13, 2019The School Board received a brief update on the development of school calendars at Monday night’s work session. Dr. Shandor informed board members that the YCSD calendar committee will develop a 2020-21 calendar with a start date of Tuesday, September 8, 2020 (the day after Labor Day). This decision was made in agreement with other regional school divisions, after determining that more time is needed to thoroughly review, and address, the stakeholder feedback provided through surveys conducted in September. Throughout this school year, both the YCSD and regional calendar committees will use the survey feedback to develop proposals for the 2021-22 school year that will include options for a pre-Labor Day start. New College Readiness ProgramPosted on: Tuesday, November 12, 2019This morning, the York County School Division and Langley Air Force Base announced a new partnership with an evidence-based, rigorous national STEM instruction program. The partnership is funded through a grant from the US. Department of Defense, worth up to $592,000, to provide a two-year College Readiness Program from the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI). This College Readiness Program will be offered at Grafton and York high schools initially and will provide comprehensive, content-specific training, mentoring, instructional materials, and ready-to-use classroom and lab materials for teachers, as well as expert-led study sessions, materials, supplies and mock assessments for students. The purpose of the grant is to increase the number of students taking and excelling in college-level math, science, and English classes. Tabb High School TragedyPosted on: Monday, October 28, 2019The York County School Division is grateful for the outpouring of support in wake of this weekend’s tragedy. The loss of these three young men is not only affecting the Tabb High family, but students, staff and community members across our division and county. Through last night’s vigil, a student gathering at Tabb High this morning, and multiple tributes on social media, the compassion and love from our county and our surrounding communities is heartwarming.
