YMS Students have "Out of this World" Experience

Students from Yorktown Middle School's (YMS) Middle Years Programme (MYP) participated in the TEDxYouth@NASA event on November 20th at the Virginia Air & Space Center in Hampton, Va. Focused on the theme, "Be Astronomical!", students engaged in a diverse array of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities in a scientific and technologically-rich interactive environment. Additionally, students viewed presentations from a variety of speakers, ranging from a scientist to a poet, and viewed a number of exhibits, such as the newly released Eyes on the Solar System application. GMS Food Drive

The Builder's Club at Grafton Middle School (GMS) has collected over 1,800 items for the York County Food Closet at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Each day during the month of November, students brought in food items to their homeroom teacher. The Kiwanis Club of Grafton volunteers picked up the items and delivered the collected food to the York County Food Closet. Read more



Gargoyles: Creatures of the Night

Grafton Middle School (GMS) students in Vicki Layne's Introduction to Art class recently completed a drawing lesson on gargoyles. The gargoyles were drawn in pencil or gray-tone pastels to give them a "stoney" appearance. The drawings also included an environment and the illusion of space (perspective). Students had to incorporate "chiaroscuro" (strong shadows and light to add a dramatic moonlit effect). An art history lesson on the gargoyles of Notre Dame Cathedral and gothic architecture was included in the lesson. Read more



iPods in the Classroom at Grafton Middle

Grafton Middle School (GMS) 7th graders, Lincoln Weniger and Trevor Lawson, are completing an iPod scavenger hunt. The students in Julie Allen's classes are using iPods for reviewing math skills and concepts. The school recently acquired an iPod cart through a grant. Read more

Great National Bird Debate: Turkey vs. Eagle

Yorktown Elementary Math, Science & Technology Elementary School (YES) students gave a performance depicting how the eagle became the national bird. The students sang about each bird's merits and how the ultimate winner was chosen. YES music teacher, Annette Kenyon, directed the performance. Read more



MES Students Show Gratitude

As part of the National School Psychology Awareness Week in November, students at Magruder Elementary School (MES) participated in the Gratitude Works Program. This gratitude project, led by Kate Lubrano, School Guidance Counselor, and Genevieve Hunter, School Psychology Intern, helped Magruder students and staff realize the true meaning of Thanksgiving. The students wrote enough notes of gratitude to fill a box and wrote 309 letters of gratitude to a wide variety of public servants, parents, members of the military and friends. Students and staff also outlined their hands and wrote statements of gratitude that later served as the feathers on a very large turkey displayed in the hallway for all to see. Read more



Literacy Night at Magruder

Magruder Elementary School (MES) held a Literacy Night on November 18th. Pajamas were the uniform of the evening and activities included: pop-up cards, costumed readers, words on iPods, workshop on RAP, Read to a Pet, PB&J Rhyme, action stories, WRL youth services and read aloud video. Read more



Parent Review of Proposed YCSD Community Service Recognition Program

Goal 4 of the York County School Division Strategic Plan includes development of a Citizenship/Community Service Objective that is designed to increase student involvement in citizenship and community service activities that are completed by students prior to graduation. A proposal has been created and is designed to recognize students who complete at least 200 hours of community service during their 9th through 12th grade years. The proposed recognition includes graduates receiving a community service diploma seal and an opportunity to purchase a cord to wear at graduation. The proposal will be made available for review on Monday, November 22nd, in Conference Room C at the School Board Office (302 Dare Road, Yorktown) from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Read more
