When Life Gives You Lemons

Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) second graders in Karolyn Blackburn's class read a story about selling lemonade. In the story a group of kids wanted to fix their clubhouse but needed money which they decided to earn by selling lemonade. The story showed the process of how the kids made it, sold it and graphed how much they had sold. They earned enough to fix the clubhouse; making lemonade out of lemons. As a follow up activity, Erin Dixon, para-educator, brought the fixings for lemonade and assisted the students in making their own lemonade. Read more



Teacher Appreciation

Kathy Swartwood's 4th grade class at Coventry Elementary School (CES), presented a very "sweet" poster to her, as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. The poster used a candy theme to tell her she is one of the best in the "Milky Way" a true "Life Saver." Read more

Yorktown Student Engineers

Students of Lydia Lassalle's 2nd grade at Yorktown Elementary School (YES) class, who are learning about measurement, used their knowledge to construct tightrope towers to fit specific requirements. The Gallery on the York has announced Art Show winners from Grafton Middle School (GMS). First Place: Shay McKinney, 7th grade - Chinese brush painting "Koi Fish"; Second Place: Dain Park, 8th grade - colored pencil and ink "Optical Illusion" and; Honorable Mention: Joshua Shier, 8th grade - Sculpture "Snake." Tabb FBLA Joins the March for Babies

On Sunday, April 29, at Christopher Newport University Campus the Tabb High School (THS) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter participated in the Walk for March of Dimes. FBLA members and sponsor Gina Mancuso-Sidhu walked in support of the March of Dimes Walk efforts to raise money for healthier babies. Tabb High's FBLA raised $235.00. Read more



Making a Profit

Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) students decide which donuts to purchase from Vivian Baggett's PEP class. The PEP classes have been working on a study of Goods and Services. Students studied how a product goes from raw materials to store shelf. They created a plan to set up a school donut shop, decided how to make the donuts, how much money was needed to start, what price to charge, and how to advertise. After expenditures were paid, students determined if a profit was made. Read more



Pennies for Adoption

The Virginia Living Museum (VLM) hosted a fund raiser for adopting a wild animal. The VLM was looking to collect $100 in donations to adopt a raccoon. Jeanette Weinberg and Donna Merkle's classes at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) competed to see who could raise the most money. Together the classes raised $175.00 for the VLM. Jeanette Weinburg's class raised the most money, $142.00, and will be recognized by the VLM. Read more
