Dare Elementary School Re-OpensPosted on: Friday, August 31, 2012Students, staff and parents gathered on Thursday, August 30, 2012, to celebrate their official return to Dare Elementary School. The building suffered damage from Hurricane Irene during a renovation project just prior to the 2011-2012 school year and remained closed throughout the year. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, School Board Vice-Chair Page Minter, Superintendent Eric Williams and Principal Mary Ahearn each thanked parents for their support of staff, and their dedication to the school, during the past year. Student representatives led the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance and participated in the ribbon-cutting. Read more |
Tabb Field Hockey Team Sets National RecordPosted on: Tuesday, August 28, 2012Tabb High School Varsity Field Hockey team won the Westfield tournament in Chantilly the last weekend of August. They tied the national record for consecutive shutouts, set in 1997 by a Pennsyvlania high school, with an 8-0 win over James Madison High in game one and then broke the record with a 4-0 victory over Lake Braddock in game two. The Tigers play host to Cox on Thursday at 7 p.m. Cox was the last team to score a goal against Tabb during last year’s season opener game. Read more |
GHS Student Takes Part in Mock Mars Mission with NASAPosted on: Thursday, August 09, 2012Katrina Asher, a rising senior at Grafton High School, has had a truly out-of-this world summer. She spent a week at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston where she planned a simulated mission to Mars and experienced life as an engineer and scientist. NASA sponsored the trip as part of the Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars project, or WISH. The WISH program encourages young women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics degrees and exposes them to the real-world applications of STEM careers at NASA. Beginning in March, participants worked on interactive, online projects focused on space exploration. The projects culminated with the selection of students invited to the NASA on-site event. Mobile Website UnveiledPosted on: Thursday, August 09, 2012Connecting with the York County School Division (YCSD) is even simpler now for students, parents and community members on the go. The division website (yorkcountyschools.org) is now available in a mobile format to make it easier to view on most smartphone and tablet devices. Smartphone users will be automatically directed to the mobile version with the option to visit the full site if they choose. Smartphone users can also access the site by going to m.yorkcountyschools.org. Led by Programmer Analyst Jason M. Short, division staff created the site to allow parents and students better access to frequently requested information such as calendars, menus and school supply lists. Read more |
YCSD Educators Honored for Technology InnovationPosted on: Thursday, August 09, 2012Three York County School Division (YCSD) educators were selected by Microsoft Corp. to showcase the innovative ways YCSD uses technology in and beyond the classroom at the Microsoft Partners in Learning 2012 US Forum in Redmond, Washington this month. Kelley Queen and Jennifer Thomas, Tabb Middle School, and Bonnie Ellis, York High School, were among 102 educators from 25 states selected to represent their schools and colleagues. Read more |
Important Vaccination InformationPosted on: Thursday, July 26, 2012All rising sixth-graders are required by Virginia law to have a tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) booster shot prior to entering the 6th grade in September. Students cannot start school without proof of this immunization. If your child has had this immunization within the last five years, the shot does not need to be repeated. YCSD Awarded $2.5 Million Federal DoDEA GrantPosted on: Thursday, July 26, 2012The York County School Division has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Educational Partnership to strengthen family-school-community relationships and enhance student achievement for military connected students. The grant will fund efforts to improve student achievement in STEM and reading. This initiative features performance tasks that integrate digital tools and allows students to change the world through service learning and entrepreneurship. Students bring their own technology to school to learn, collaborate and work to make a difference locally, nationally and globally. Read more |
Newport News Reading Council Honors Two York County EmployeesPosted on: Tuesday, July 24, 2012Kathryn Patterson was named Administrator of the Year for the Newport News Reading Council. This award recognizes Kathryn’s accomplishments in professional development for reading specialists, collaboration with classroom teachers, and management of the Title I program. Dee Pinder of Bethel Manor Elementary School was named Reading Para-Professional of the Year. Known for her dedication to students, Dee takes the initiative to seek professional growth opportunities and additional resources for reading interventions. Read more |
