York High School 2013 National Merit Semifinalists

Each year, some 16,000 Semifinalists are selected to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. The Competition is based upon students' performance on the PSAT test during junior year. This year York High School (YHS) is pleased to announce that the following students are semifinalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Competition: Abigail Chen, Stephanie Dygert and Paul Kennedy. Tabb High School Celebrates 40 Years of Excellence in Education

Tabb High School (THS) kicks off its 40th year of operation with a welcome back to school birthday celebration breakfast sponsored by the THS PTSA. Faculty and staff were joined by faculty and student alumni for the breakfast feast organized by the PTSA Hospitality Chair Laura Kelly and her team Deni Lewis and Liz Bryant. The THS Administrative team and the SCA, sponsored by Linnea Terndrup, spiced up the event with 40 year decoration and banners. Read more



Bailey Field Scoreboard Dedication Ceremony

In December of 2011, the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. reached out to TowneBank to sponsor a new scoreboard for Bailey Field. Bailey Field, located on the campus of York High School, hosts athletic events for three York County School Division high schools. TowneBank committed to fully funding this project. Members of the Foundation and TowneBank representatives will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Bailey Field at 6:45 p.m., Friday, September 7, 2012. Read more



YCSD Student and Educator Exhibition

On August 23, 2012, YCSD teachers and administrators kicked off the year with a division-wide exhibition of student and educator work. Over 100 teachers representing all grade levels and all 19 schools presented their engaging and transformative learning activities in a gallery walk and tabletop discussions. Teachers had the opportunity to explore exemplary lessons and examples of student work, engage in conversations with colleagues and develop a deeper understanding of transformative learning in YCSD. Dare Elementary School Re-Opens

Students, staff and parents gathered on Thursday, August 30, 2012, to celebrate their official return to Dare Elementary School. The building suffered damage from Hurricane Irene during a renovation project just prior to the 2011-2012 school year and remained closed throughout the year. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, School Board Vice-Chair Page Minter, Superintendent Eric Williams and Principal Mary Ahearn each thanked parents for their support of staff, and their dedication to the school, during the past year. Student representatives led the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance and participated in the ribbon-cutting. Read more



Tabb Field Hockey Team Sets National Record

Tabb High School Varsity Field Hockey team won the Westfield tournament in Chantilly the last weekend of August. They tied the national record for consecutive shutouts, set in 1997 by a Pennsyvlania high school, with an 8-0 win over James Madison High in game one and then broke the record with a 4-0 victory over Lake Braddock in game two. The Tigers play host to Cox on Thursday at 7 p.m. Cox was the last team to score a goal against Tabb during last year’s season opener game. Read more



GHS Student Takes Part in Mock Mars Mission with NASA

Katrina Asher, a rising senior at Grafton High School, has had a truly out-of-this world summer. She spent a week at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston where she planned a simulated mission to Mars and experienced life as an engineer and scientist. NASA sponsored the trip as part of the Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars project, or WISH. The WISH program encourages young women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics degrees and exposes them to the real-world applications of STEM careers at NASA. Beginning in March, participants worked on interactive, online projects focused on space exploration. The projects culminated with the selection of students invited to the NASA on-site event.
