Tabb Elementary Students Learn Pumpkin Facts

After reading the book How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin by Margaret McNamara, Mrs. Carter's third grade class set out to discover pumpkin facts for themselves. First the students measured the size, observed the color and counted the number of ribs. From these observations, they estimated which pumpkin would have the most seeds. They then dug out all the slimy insides, the most fun by far. When the seeds were dry, the students counted their seeds using different groups, ones, twos, fives, tens and twenties. They discovered that counting by twenties was the quickest method. From their data, students concluded that the largest pumpkin did not necessarily have the most seeds. The older ones with a darker color and more ribs had the most. Read more



YSCD Students and Staff have Big Hearts!

Seaford Elementary students, staff and parents supported the American Heart Association by raising money and participating in the Heart Walk held Saturday, October 13, in Newport News Park. This is an important cause to Seaford as two of their current students have been previously affected by heart conditions. Seaford raised $618.90 for the American Heart Association. The money was raised by selling hearts in honor of persons impacted by heart conditions. These hearts were displayed in the hall of Seaford Elementary School. Dr. Karen Cagle led the group of Grafton Middle School participants, which included Girls on Course members, at the American Heart Walk. The primary focus is to help raise community awareness of Healthy Eating, Physical Activity, and Children's Health. Read more



York High Student Selected for International Space Olympics

A York County School Division student is one of just five Virginia students selected to take part in the 2012 International Space Olympics, which begin this week. Joey Hsu, a senior enrolled at both York High School and the Governor's School for Science and Technology student, is spending ten days in Russia as part of the Virginia Department of Education-sponsored team. YCSD to Host Strategic Plan Community Forums

The York County School Board is reviewing and revising the division’s Strategic Plan throughout the 2012-2013 school year. This plan will help shape the division’s goals and priorities for the future. The School Board invites all community members to participate in community forums to help shape the vision for our school system’s future. The Strategic Plan Community Forums will be held on November 7 at Tabb High School from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. and on November 8 at Bruton High School from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Read more



Queens Lake Student Visit VIMS

Queens Lake Middle School students recently attended a field trip to the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in VA at VIMS. Students studied oyster reef communities in the lab using microscopes and dichotomous keys. They also had the opportunity to explore the shallow water habitats of the York River. Some of the organisms that students collected, using seine and dip nets, are now kept in aquariums in the school’s life science classroom. Read more



Seaford 3rd Graders Worm Their Way Through Science

Third graders in Mrs. Long's class use the scientific process to determine whether worms preferred light/dark, wet/dry, rough/smooth. They had to develop a hypothesis, collect data from repeated trials, and revise their hypotheses. Pictured is Kierten Meitz who was testing wet and dry. Read more



Seaford Kindergarteners Make Healthy Choices

Students in Mrs. Clark's Kindergarten class enjoy buying lunch in the cafeteria. Students are allowed to choose multiple fruits and vegetables. These three students were all enjoying bananas, the fruit offered for the day, and also had chosen broccoli, and a main dish to complete their lunch. Read more



Yorktown Elementary Patriotism

First graders at Yorktown Elementary Math Science Technology Magnet School have been engaged in learning about the patriotic symbols of the United States. Each student decorated the American flag, designed a foldable Washington Monument, dressed in the crown and carried the torch of the Statue of Liberty, made and displayed the American Bald Eagle and the Liberty Bell. Students in Mrs. Cagle’s first grade class enjoyed bringing this social studies SOL to life by proudly displaying some of their favorite symbols of the United States. Read more



A Gift of Words from the Verizon Pioneers

GMS Reaches Out to French Pen-pals

Mrs. Rowe's French II students at Grafton Middle School are filming introductions to send to their French pen-pals. Their pen-pals attend Jules Valles a high school near Toulouse, France. The students are excited to see their pen-pals via video and learn more about French culture. Read more
