School of the Arts Students Bring Home HonorsPosted on: Friday, November 09, 2012SOA students and staff recently participated in the Virginia Theatre Conference in Reston, Virginia. This conference has workshops, college auditions, and competitions for students across the state. When students do well in these contests, they are then invited to the South Eastern Theatre Conference which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky in March. SOA had several winners at the conference. SOA Teacher, Sarah Dixon won best director in the state; students Cole Francum, Carrie Holovach and Claire Schuman won best acting awards. Congratulations to all SOA winners. Read more |
LEGO ChampionsPosted on: Friday, November 09, 2012Grafton Bethel’s Lego Team competed in regional competition at Crittenden Middle School on Saturday, November 3, 2012. The team prepared for this competition for two months by preparing a skit “Senior Survivors” in which they presented many ways that senior citizens can stay fit and healthy. Their invention was a special bed that would “lift and slide” seniors out gently, with a special red button that would remind them of their medications and also send interactive health vital signs to their medical providers. The team will now advance to the Tri-State Competition in Harrisonburg at James Madison University in December. Read more |
Seaford Elementary Pumpkin PredictionsPosted on: Friday, November 09, 2012Seaford first graders got messy to make a variety of measurements of three different pumpkins. Student made predictions in their class about the pumpkins and then investigated their pumpkins in the cafeteria. Students predicted the seed count, weight, height, circumference, and number of ribs of three different size pumpkins. Students also made their own pumpkin t-shirts to be worn on Pumpkin Day! Grafton High School Vote in National Student Mock ElectionPosted on: Friday, November 09, 2012Students and teachers at Grafton High School (GHS) took part in a national mock election on October 31st and November 1st. Students used a state-of-the art online voting system as they participated in a mock election program sponsored by the Youth Leadership Initiative (YLI), a national civic education program based at the University of Virginia Center for Politics. With approximately one million students expected to vote nationwide during the two-week voting period from October 22-November 1, the YLI Mock Election is the largest secure, student-only online mock election in the nation. Yorktown Middle School Field Hockey wins Bay Rivers District ChampionshipPosted on: Friday, November 09, 2012The Yorktown Middle School (YMS) Field Hockey team won the Bay Rivers District Championship on Friday. They beat the previously undefeated Page Middle School by a score of 2 to 1. The win highlighted an outstanding season for the Lady Falcons with two notable accomplishments. The first was winning the championship for the first time in YMS history. Second, the Falcon team raised over $3000 for the American Cancer Society. The Falcons and Grafton Middle School Clippers played a game in which all proceeds were donated to the American Cancer Society. This amount more than doubled the previous two years combined donations for the 'Play for the Cure' games. The Falcons are coached by Cathy St. Mary, Phil Sheldon and Brooke Rowe. Read more |
School Board ResolutionPosted on: Friday, November 02, 2012At the regular October meeting, the York County School Board approved a resolution urging Congress and the Administration to amend the Budget Control Act as it relates to sequestration. Third Grade Teachers of MES Awarded Innovative Instructional GrantPosted on: Friday, November 02, 2012Thursday, November 1st third grade teachers and administrators of Magruder Elementary School were awarded a check from the York Foundation for Public Education for the Innovative Instructional grant. The teachers and administrators were also the winners of the Union First Market Bank Innovative Grant of Mathematical Instruction. Congratulations to these well deserving women. Students had the experience of chopping and pressing apples and learned about simple machines and changing solids to liquids as the apples were pressed to make fresh apple cider. Read more |
