						York County School Division 2013 Science Fair Winners AnnouncedPosted on: Thursday, January 17, 2013The York County School Division is pleased to announce the winners in the York County School Division Science Fair. This year’s theme, “What if I…” challenged students to ask new questions and investigate a wide range of topics. First, second, and third place winners are invited to apply to participate in the regional Tidewater Science Fair held at Old Dominion University on Saturday March 16, 2013. Congratulations to all students who participated in the fair and a sincere thank you to the science teachers who encouraged and guided students throughout the scientific process. 						Virginia Lottery Super Teacher AwardsPosted on: Thursday, January 17, 2013The Virginia Lottery and the Virginia PTA are planning to honor local teachers who meet the distinction of “Super Teacher.”  The sixth annual Virginia Lottery Super Teacher awards will help shine a spotlight on a valuable Virginia resource: dedicated and talented public school teachers who really make a difference in shaping young lives.  Do you know a York County School Division teacher who should be named the next “Super Teacher” in Virginia?  The Lottery is seeking nominations for any K-12 Virginia public school teacher for the Super Teacher awards.  Eight winners will be chosen.  Each award consists of a prize of $2,000 and an additional $2,000 classroom credit from Virginia-based The Supply Room Companies. This year, all eight Super Teacher schools will qualify for a second contest. Read more   | 
				
					
						Future Scientists Present Their Research Findings at Tabb Science FairPosted on: Friday, January 11, 2013Students from Tabb High School participated in the THS Annual Science Fair on Monday December 17, 2012 in the THS cafeteria.  The event provided students with a venue to present their research and an opportunity to interact with real scientists and individuals with STEM careers.  The judges provided valuable feedback and encouragement for the young scientists. Science Instructor and Science Fair Coordinator Ms. Joyce Kuberek, organized the events for the students. She secured members from our own science community to critique the students' work.  At the conclusion of the event, 57 students (individual and teams) were afforded the opportunity to continue on to the York County School Division Science Fair on Wednesday, January 16, 2013. 						Grafton Middle School Art Students Get 'Into Character' with Clay MasksPosted on: Friday, January 11, 2013Students in Karen Covington's Sculpture and Crafts class made masks out of clay and then decorated using paint, yarn, and other materials. The students learned about masks from around the world and their many uses such as disguise, protection, storytelling/getting "into character", and honoring our ancestors. Students spent two days creating and shaping the masks and one day decorating. Read more   | 
				
					
						TMS French Students Exchange with Students from FrancePosted on: Friday, January 11, 2013The French II students at Tabb Middle School have been exchanging videos and emails with students who live in a small town near Toulouse, France. The students received a box from their pen-pals which included holiday cards, gifts and French chocolates. The students have been learning a lot about French culture through this exchange. 						Fashion Show Sparkles at TabbPosted on: Friday, January 11, 2013Tabb High School's Fashion Marketing Department hosted its' 5th Annual Fashion Show for a Cause, benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Thursday December 6th 2012. It consisted of a wide range of styles in clothing, music and inspiration. The theme was Winter Wonderland, and included scenes of clothing you would wear to: school, work, a ski vacation, a tropical getaway and also a formal wear portion of the show. Hair and makeup were provided by Regency Beauty Institute, formal clothing borrowed from Ames Tuxedos and David's Bridal, and music from DJ Howard Alexander of Colonial DJs. This event raised over $1,500 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honor of Team Amanda. Read more   | 
				
					
						YFPE Grant Aids in Microscope LabPosted on: Friday, January 11, 2013The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. Technology grant allowed the science department at York High to purchase video screen microscopes. The microscopes were being used by students to calculate the size of a cell and the number of cells in one grain of yeast.  The microscopes will allow the students to collaborate more during microscope labs. In addition, students also used the SD card function and took digital photos for a photography project. 						Seaford Students Reach Out to Sandy Hook ElementaryPosted on: Friday, January 04, 2013Seaford Elementary pre-schoolers made snowflakes to send to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut.  Sandy Hook's PTA will be using these snowflakes to transform the hallways of their temporary school building into a winter wonderland. 						Decorating Gingerbread Houses at YESPosted on: Friday, January 04, 2013All five first grade classes at Yorktown Elementary School celebrated the holiday season by rotating classes, making gingerbread crafts, listening to variations of the gingerbread stories, and tasting samples of gingerbread.  As a culmination to the activities, all students decorated their own gingerbread houses to take home. Read more   | 
				
					
						Tabb Middle School Students Visit York ConvalescentPosted on: Friday, January 04, 2013As part of their transformative project, Lisa Spruill’s Public Speaking class researched what life was like in the 40’s and 50’s. Based on their research, they wrote a set of questions to the residents at the York Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.  After the field trip, the students returned to the library to type up the information that they collected from their interviews and presented the findings to their classmates. Read more   |
