YHS Classroom Visit

YCSD Superintendent Eric Williams, Ed.D. visited the senior English class taught by Antoinette Barnett at York High School in February. He was invited to speak to the class in connection with their college and career unit. Students asked questions regarding the work of a Superintendent and also discussed effective teaching, favorite lessons and school food. Read more



Local Educators to Participate in Global Education Symposium in Washington D.C.

York High School teacher Amy Holtschneider and Principal Dr. Peggie Constantino visited Washington D.C. in February to take part in the Teachers for Global Classrooms Program’s (TGC) Global Education Symposium. They are among a group of 160 educators selected to participate in the event, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). The Teachers for Global Classrooms Program is an exchange and professional development opportunity for secondary school teachers. The program’s goal is to give teachers the experience and skills to advance their schools’ global education practices, internationalizing teaching and learning in their classrooms. Participants apply through the non-profit organization IREX. Read more

Instructional Materials Review

The York County School Division has begun the Instructional Material Review (IMR) process for world language levels I and II textbooks (for French, German, Latin and Spanish). All textbooks and related teacher resources, student materials and electronic materials are reviewed and adopted through this process. Materials that support the YCSD Curriculum and correlate highly with the Virginia Standards of Learning will be targeted for review. Parents and community stakeholders are invited to review, and provide feedback on, the materials recommended for adoption. The Public Review is scheduled for Friday, March 1, 2013 in the School Board Office Round Room. Materials will be on display from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Read more

Several Yorktown Middle School (YMS) band students participated in the VA Band and Orchestra Directors Association District VIII Junior District Band Concert held on February 1st and 2nd at Warhill High School in Williamsburg, Virginia. YMS was honored to have the following students participate: Jonathan Davis, Walter Buck, Ben Lofton, Hannah Cole, Tyler Smith, Kevin Babu, Liam Billings, Cale Overstgreet, Joe Topp, and Jim Furches. Yorktown Middle School (YMS) recognizes students each month during the school year who have shown exemplary behavior or outstanding character for that month. All Things Strings Performs at Mt. Vernon Elementary School

"All Things Strings" which is a branch of the Williamsburg Symphonia presented a program "Meet the Musicians" to the fourth grade students at Mt. Vernon Elementary School. Students had the opportunity to play string instruments and hear the musicians play music from many different countries. Read more



Tabb Middle School National Junior Honor Society Helps out PORT

Tabb Middle School National Junior Honor Society assembled hygiene kits for the Peninsula's largest homeless shelter, PORT. Students packed over 100 kits that included items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, body wash and shampoo. This is just one of the many service projects that Tabb NJHS members support throughout the year. Read more



THS Grasses for the Masses Project

Tabb High School's Club Earth has undertaken an industrious project to help with the rehabilitation of our local waterways by growing and planting underwater grasses. The group is sponsored by THS faculty members Sherri Sklute, Diane Kokorelis, Kristin Grigonis and Lynn Shematek. Participants in the program grow wild celery (Vallisneria americana), a type of underwater grass at the school for 10-12 weeks. After 10-12 weeks of grow-out, participants will gather to plant their grasses in select local rivers to bolster grass populations and help restore the Bay. Last year, Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) participants planted over 6,000 underwater grasses between the two restoration sites on the Potomac and James Rivers. Read more
